  • Radio 1 based cynicism……
  • Would they really play that awful pile of shit Elton John cover squawked out by miss prissy Goulding if she wasn’t being boffed by Gregory James?

Whilst we’re on about Radio 1; how comes ‘In New Music We Trust’ that’s being bandied about at the moment features White Lies?

I’m sure the promotion of up and coming new bands shouldn’t include ‘In Bands That Were About A Couple Of Years Ago, But Never Really Made It, So Thought They’d Have Another Go We Trust’.

Record company waving some freshly printed purple ones about?

Oh, and you, yes you there – if you’re about to tell me not to listen to Radio 1, then don’t. I’m perfectly aware that for the majority it’s shit, but I’m not letting that get in the way of a good moan.

    Poor effort

Do they still have Junior Choice with Ed “Stewpot” Stewart on a Sunday morning ?
    I used to like that.

    Albert & the lion.
    The runaway train.
    Nellie the elephant.

Ah, happy daze. Is it still going ?

One thing that I thought was quite interesting is that the songs they’re playing aren’t necessarily what their audience wants to hear. They did an all-day requests show a while back and the playlist was completely different to the normal trollop, and quite good. Very similar to that played by Mark Radcliffe on Radio 2, in fact.

You can’t ruin an Elton John song -he’s already done it for you.

On the other hand, what was that horrendous, insipid cover of Dave Bowie’s Heroes I heard in the changing rooms yesterday??? Video seemed to feature some war footage, so I guess it’s for charidee. But, by jingo it was bad.

Mark Radcliffe and stuart maconie should be on the radio all the time. Ok, they can have a breather every now and again and let Lauren Laverne, Craig Charles and Huey Morgan on…..

Elena Jane Goulding[1] (born 30 December 1986),[2] better known as Ellie Goulding, is a British singer-songwriter and guitarist. She rose to fame after topping the BBC Sound of 2010 poll and winning the Critics’ Choice award at the 2010 BRIT Awards. After signing to Polydor Records in 2009, Goulding released her first extended play An Introduction to Ellie Goulding, followed by her debut full-length studio album, Lights, in 2010. Later that year Goulding recorded a re-release of Lights entitled Bright Lights. Goulding is currently working on her second album. As of January 2011, Goulding has been nominated for two 2011 BRIT Awards for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Artist.

I’ve got fond memories of Radio 1 in the early 90’s, I used to listen to it whilst doing my homework. Lamacq and Whiley were hosting the Evening Session back then and I was introduced to such audio delights as PWEI and Ned’s Atomic Dustbin.

It’s still quite good in the evenings sometimes, but I miss John Peel…then again, at 31 I’m outside the target demographic now.
They used to have some comedy shows too, does anyone remember Simon Munnery’s ‘Alan Parker – Urban Warrior’ character? I seem to recall a couple of series of that and Chris Morris showcased ‘Blue Jam’ on there too.

What I really miss though is XFM, back in the days when they were broadcasting on temporary test licences (92′-95′?). You used to get the likes of Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Shudder to Think and New Kingdom…and that was during the breakfast show! It was the closest we’ve ever come to US style college radio.

Ellie Goulding is a horse faced joke.

It’s music for people who don’t like music.

    meanwhile:

R2 are playing bland toss. it’s their ‘record of the week!’ noless … it’s rubbish.

R6 are playing endless R6 promo jongles, telling us how great they are. before telling how us cool Hughie is, before telling us how cool Lauren Laverne is. repeat.

BBC music radio is bloody rubbish.

Sorry, any “Radio 1” rant that doesn’t include Tim Westwood is automatically to be rendered null and void.

That song contains possibly the worst line ever.

‘If I was a sculptor, but then again no’

    😕

It’s not so much the line, it’s the ways she says it.

    Vile, hideous creature.

I think simpering and sickly would be a bit fairer than vile and hideous Gary, but hey ho – I think it’s fair to say we don’t like her.

Fair enough. She does offend my very soul however.

    We really have regressed musically.

20 years ago (well, 19 but whatever) PJ Harvey was breaking through with some truly exciting music.

    Now? Ellie Goulding.

    Oh well.

A friend recently tried to organise a night out to see the whining bint in Sheffield. I was called a boring sod, as I didn’t want to go.

Unsurprisingly the night out was cancelled, as neither did anyone else.

So by that definition we should only buy music that’s up for awards voted by industry types who every year put forward artists who they want to sell more units to line their own pockets?

Ellie Goulding is yet another “Greys Anatomy Soundtrack” artist who’ll release a wispy cover version of a once great song because a) people know it, and b) it’s wispy and inoffensive, which is hip at the moment

I took my daughter to see Miss Goulding in Bristol before Christmas working on the theory that I like live music and will listen to pretty much anything even if it’s not my choice.

I spent nearly the whole gig in the bar in a different room!!

Unfortunately I could still hear her. 🙁

I think your all turning into your Dad’s. Radio 1 has always played chart music always has and probably always will.

Back to my OP – just listening to Amy Macdonald on Absolute radio.

I know some people don’t like the fact she’s been commercialised, but I’d prefer to hear her on Radio 1 than Ms Greg James (I’d boff her over Goulding too 😉 )

Anyone got any opinions on White Lies being ‘not new music’?

In defence of a lot of pop artists these days, at least a greater number of them can actually sing and perform adequately live compared to those from 20 years ago. They’re still garbage, but that’s what the masses seem to want.

As for White Lies, they’re a great band, but like Editors, We Are Scientists and an endless list of other great bands they’ll never break into the mainstream. That suits me fine, as long as they keep making good albums, I’ll keep buying them:D

Editors and We are Scientists were fairly mainstream at one point. Editors still get a bit of airtime on Radio 1. Now those are two bands I can’t **** stand! I’d rather listen to Ellie Goulding 😛

Would that be the same Editors who have enjoyed a string of Top 10 singles, seen two of their three albums hit No.1 in the UK album chart, sold approximately 2.5 million albums, had sold out tours in the UK and abroad and headlined festivals throughout Europe?

£25 a ticket!! (mrs dezb likes em)

Editors, We Are Scientists, Snow patrol, Keane et al make me want to kill myself – and don’t even get me started on Coldplay.
