  • Quick question about iPhone data usage before I upgrade on Vodafone

So, the iPhone deals on Vodafone are out for pre-order. Voda are offering 1Gb mobile internet/email etc. What's the deal with the interweb usage on it? I'll be using for the usual web surfing, bit of e-mail (but nothing data heavy, just text e-mail). Will I ever struggle to hit the 1Gb?

As an aside, they do say "unlimited" WiFi – the cheeky feckers. Why thank you for allowing me unlimited WiFi, no really, you're too kind.

Normal users would struggle to hit 1gb by just doing the usual browsing etc. I never got near that kind of data size when I had mine on O2.

Cheers GrahamS…just placed the order. Expecting delivery 14th Jan. Woo hoo.

Unlike the likes of you, I have little or no time to watch porn YouTube/streaming video/TV during the day and in the evening I can use my home WiFi to watch porn YouTube/streaming video/TV.

Booked your boarding trip this year chap?

sorry to hijack but mickyfinn – can you steam last.fm over your 3g ? mine keeps buffering and not playing smoothly despite being in an area having a good 3g connection – one that gives 4meg on my 3g dongle . works fine on my wifi mind !

lastfm streams fine over 3G for me (on Orange).

Have you checked your "stream in high quality" setting? If you have that set to On, it could cause you issues on 3G.

Ahh see I'm away from home a lot, so the ability to watch porn YouTube/streaming video/TV on 3G is always useful 😀

Just checked mine: only 126MB on 3G since 17th November – must be a dry month 😀

Aye, Fernie, 10th Feb – last one for a while though. MrsGrahamS is with child 😀

    Also 😀

o2 seems to be about 2GB before they start looking at your account.

Can you get a decent deal on vodafone?

I just got a free 32GB 3GS on a 35/month contract with o2, its a refurb but that doesn't bother me, same guarantee as a new one and if anything look suspect I can sent it back in the 14 day cooling off period.

Just checked my usage on my 3G iPhone (which I've had almost 18 months now)… Only 152MB of data sent, and only 616MB of data recieved…

    Which is NOTHING!

But then I barely do anything on it when I'm not in range of a WiFi network. Maybe send/recieve a few text emails, but that's about it. I only really surf the internet on it when in range of a WiFi connection as it's a bit slow on 3G…

Conversely though, I have to have an unlimited Broadband package for the home as I can easily exceed 10GB or more per month between my desktop and my laptop…

    A cautionery tale

We have 2 i-phones here at work both of the guys travel abroad one of them quite extensively his bill last month was £6k the other £2.5k. When asked they were both listening to radio which burned through their monthly allowance in around 40 minutes this is on the highest data usage tariff.

Planning on going cat skiing boarding this year. Never done it before, and I'll be on a freestyle board, so I'll post another sad attempt at off-piste for you to have a giggle at 🙂

So they must have explicitly gone to the Settings menu then General->Network and turned on the "Data Roaming" option, which is off by default for this very reason, and ignored the text about "substantial roaming charges" when abroad. 🙄

I've had my 3G for around a year, and last time I checked, a couple of weeks ago, my download was about 3.2Gb, but I have 6Music on for six hours a day, streaming via Tune.it iCarRadio. That's on O2, obviously.

another question on this as MrsV wants one from Vodafone in the New Year

Basic model is 3G and 8GB

or for a higher tariff or an upfront payment we could get a 3GS and 16GB

Given that i wouldn't want her to be doing a lot of big downloads if that exceeds data allowances, what in laymans terms is the benefit of 3GS over 3G

And how much storage does a girl need on a phone (given it's probably like a handbag and will be brimmed whatever size it is)

Not very much to be quite honest!

3 meg camera Vs 2 meg
    Video Camera
    Voice Control
    Compass
    Slightly quicker browsing

That's it! personally, the only thing I'd be interested in is the quicker browsing, but it's never going to make any difference when compared with any laptop or PC.

Personally I was more than happy with my original 2G iPhone, the only reason I upgraded was cos when they brought out the 3G iPhone they offered a FREE upgrade to those of us with an original 2G iPhone, so I thought it silly not to take them up on the offer… Sold my original iPhone for £222 on ebay, so was more than £200 up on the deal all said and done! But 95% of the time I use my phone for emailing or the internet, I'm in range of a wifi network, so the 3G facility really makes very little difference for me. The 3GS version would be even less of an improvement for me, hence I don't think I'll be upgrading when my contract runs out.

And how much storage does a girl need on a phone (given it's probably like a handbag and will be brimmed whatever size it is)

Will she use it as an iPod or not? If yes, then more storage is obviously better as it essentially means you've got more room for storing music. If no, then just buy the smallest version, as otherwise you're wasting your money. Me, I don't have a seperate iPod, so bought the 16GB version as it was the biggest available at the time, 32GB is available now, and rumours are when the next Gen iPhone comes out it will have up to 64GB storage capacity.

Personally I'd definitely go for a 3Gs. The faster processor makes a big difference, especially for games and switching between apps.

The compass and video camera will come into their own as more Augmented Reality apps are released.

yeah, I'm going for the 3Gs too for August Realism like GrahamS says. Actually, it's really just to piss mrs deadly off if I'm honest.

i've used about 4.5Gb since the start of May. I stream radio every so often (WunderRadio – great app), and use Google maps a bit in the car for a couple of hours at a time every two or three weeks on average…

remind me again – music storage. 8GB = how many albums approx?

Ok, 3G 8gb user for 15 months. In that time I have received 5gb of data, so do the maths. I have never streamed radio stations and I don't watch videos very often. I personally would be very scared of not having an unlimited data usage tariff. When you start using it more you'll find loads of things that use up that data package. I never used my last phone much (compared to what it could do, a Sony ericcson smart phone) but my iPhone does everything now. I use it for most web browsing as it's easier than getting laptop out!!

3GS v 3G? 3GS every time, with as big a storage as possible. Nice to put your own videos on and I can't do that withall the music I have too. The S versionis also way faster and with the software update my runs a tad slower which is annoying. All the extras are worth having in my opinion.

DD, do they mean unlimited wifi usage with someone like the Cloud network like O2 offer? If so this is a handy thing to have as you can browse at high speed while out and about.
