Not sure which of these two I prefer but I lean more towards the second - what do others think?

Geetee, I prefer the first one. It's much sharper; especially round the eyes which are full of life in the first photo but blurry, dark and partly shaded in the second.
Geetee, I much prefer the second, less is more...........

Skateboard legend and female role model!
hi there...
this photo wasn't taken in the last month, as I have no camera at present, but I was just looking through some old folders and found this
Nothing to be proud of in the taking of the photograph, but I did feel incredibly privileged to witness these strange sand formations at the foot of cliffs on the East Devon jurassic coast after recent storms... The sand perfectly mimicking the more permanent rock formations
had a nice weekend break in St Ives, Cornwall...

I really like your work Greg and have commented to that effect that in the past, but that photo of Lucy Adams doesn't do anything for me whereas a lot of your skatepark stuff does. Maybe it's too far back. I feel no connection to the subject not any alienation. It's like she's just another object in the frame.

You know I think you might be right. It is definitely lacking something and I think it is engagement and connection.

I'll admit it. I've never given this thread much of a look in, guessing it would be full of tedious Amateur Photographer style moonlit landscape bollux, and photos of autumn leaves. And so it was...
But the diptych of your parents on the bed by geetee1972 is genuinely moving and awesum. Great photo(s).
Love it. (and I even got to be quite artsomely pretentious and use the word 'diptych') 😆

That's lovely of you to say. My dad's not well and in all honesty we nearly lost him last week. His heart is giving up and he has dementia. It's hard on my mum mostly as she is his care giver and my brother and I are not close by. I visited over the weekend and want to get more of him before it's too late. I know this is potentially a bit 'cloying' but it's part of my own therapy, to take and share the pictures, in coming to terms with the innevitable.
Two more that are quite different.

Oh and love the use of 'diptych'; nothing wrong with that at all.
Well done Greg, very brave. Stay strong.
As an aside, you will love Doug DuBois' photos of his family
http://dougdubois.com/atdan/
Bob I think it must have been you who already mentioned Doug du Bois to me. Whoever it was, I immediately purchased a copy of 'My Last Day a Seventeen' as a result.
I hadn't seen this set before though so thank you and yes, that is heart breakingly beautiful work. Something to aspire to in terms of capturing the sensitivity and frailty of life.
I think it was me Greg, I'm a bit of a fan..
As I remember he copped a bit of flak from his Dad about it, but I see a very sensitive treatment of a delicate subject (partly why I thought you'd like to see it)
Some more dancing in the street!

Greg , I'm crying like a baby here after seeing these photos of your mum and dad . You've probably had every man and his dog telling you to make the most of every minute you've got together but it's so true . I lost my dad 3 months ago . Not a day goes by without me thinking " I wish we'd gone there " or "wish we'd done that together " . Stay strong fella for all of your family . Mark

I shot a gig last night and got some pics. The first one was taken in near darkness backstage at ISO10000! It's slightly blurry and a bit noisy, but it totally captures the vibe I was going for.

tlr gets a thumbs up from me too 🙂
So, not within the last month, but very definitely proud of this (and the accompanying photos from the rest of the day). I got into portrait and event photography to prepare myself for the almighty task of photographing a friends' wedding. I swore I'd never do one, but I did, and I survived, and I shot some half-decent stuff. And I genuinely don't care if no one other than the bride and groom like them, just proud of myself, both for the journey to that stage and being able to execute everything I'd learned in the previous 9 months.
A small selection of the other photos on my website: http://kitcarruthersphotography.com/huw-caths-portobello-wedding/

You're a braver man than me Kit - no way I'd ever do a wedding, let alone a friends wedding!!!
TLR, those pics are fantastic. Any chance of a full breakdown so we can geek out over your settings (I'd be interested to know what shutter speed in particular!)
Threefish - great pic. I don't normally dig abstract arty images, but that one'a very smart. Great composition

Yes so you should be Kit. It must be a monumentally daunting task. I think I would do everything I could to try and talk someone out of asking me!
This is one of those situations where the value of a true professional photographer becomes very apparent. It also highlights just how poorly the general public understand and appreciate that value. It's a crying shame that the skill and art is so woefully under valued.
I think I would do everything I could to try and talk someone out of asking me!
I'd been approached a couple of times before Huw and Cath did, but turned them down because they were strangers. I felt much more comfortable doing it for good friends, but obviously with the caveat that it was my first time, etc. The fact that they were so relaxed about it really helped, but it was still stressful.
I think those who do it professionally either just love weddings, or thrive under those stressful conditions. Neither apply to me, but if people want to pay me to do more, then I'd consider it!
Impressed with the wedding photo Kit.
I shot a very small wedding for friends recently. To say I was stressed is an understatement.
Anyway this last month has seen me take some of my favourite shots just by going to places other than my beloved Weymouth so I have a few locations planned for the Christmas break. Just me and my 15mm fisheye.
I can't get over the fact you can shoot onto the sun without loads of flare.

Very varied to be honest, lots of experimenting. If you follow the Flickr link all the settings are in there along with lots of other pictures. But basically as fast a shutter speed as possible, you'd probably need about 1/4000th to really freeze the wings, but the key for me seemed to be using a remote triggered flash on 1/16th or 1/8th. This has the effect of helping freeze the bird, and isolate it whilst still allowing reasonable shutter speeds and ISO. My old 7d isn't great at high ISO, much above 800 is a bit of a struggle so super fast shutter speeds weren't really available to me.
The EXIF data is not shown Tim, at least it's not viewable to me.
Interesting to hear that you used a flash, though! Have you cropped them much too? I'd love to get into wildlife photography, but I have neither the patience or the cash!
