Matt, those BBMF pics are superb! The Hurri is a IIc, currently in the colours of the SEAC, and fitted with repro 20mm cannon. She was apparently the last Hurri ever built.
The Spit's a Mk LE XVIE, and served time at an Empire Training School at RAF Hullavington, which is only a few miles from me, I didn't even know there had been an air training school there, I knew it as a parachute packing establishment.
I love those clipped wing, bubble-canopy Spits, beautiful planes.

That would make sense, I think the Mk IIC (with the canon) wasn't deployed much in the European theatre, but was used in Asia and Africa, as development efforts to allow the Hurri to keep pace with the Messerschmidts and Fokke-Wolfs went to the Spit. I think it was mainly ground attack with the 20 mm canon, though the mad Mk IID I think had two 40 mm canon with about 30 rounds.

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but as stated this Hurri was in South East Asia and the concern was that in the heat of battle certain of our allies might mistake the red in the centre of the standard British roundel for Japanese markings.
