Was out today in the relatively muddy autumn / winter conditions that we have been experiencing up here in scotchland. So I stuck on some maxxis minions dhr and dhf.
The rear has been sorted but the front has been well quite frankly scary. It slid out on almost every corner that needed to be leaned into.
Is there a nirvana pressure for these tyres ,are they just not that good in the slop or do you need to throw them on their edges to get them grip.
So far I’m not impressed with the front one.

Erm, isn’t the Minion really a dry condition tyre?

At least, I’ve always considered them such, and gone for High Rollers for all-round conditions and Swamp Things when it gets muddy.

I’ve just taken a high roller off because it was worse .I think that is a dry conditions tyre. I’ve got a specialised clutch sx on my hardtail which is brilliant although a bit heavy, might throw that on instead.

Try a supertacky Swamp Thing on the front.

Amazingly grippy in the kind of sloppy conditions everyone seems to have at the moment.

I’ve got some mud x’s in the shed but i’m a big tyre /clydesdale guy and don’t like the narrow width.
Do you get the swamp things in 2.35

Yes I currently have Mud X 2.0 on back and swamp thing 2.35 on front.

yeah 2.35 swampthings on my cotic, and 2.5s on my bullit. Plenty wide.

Yep, I’m pretty sure the Swamp Thing is available 2.35″ or 2.5″ in Dual or Single ply and in 42a and 60a flavours.

Don’t Maxxis advertise the minion as “The Minion DHF was designed for the often loose and muddy conditions of aggressive all-mountain terrain”? I run the Minion 2.35 ST up front for winter and either a HR or Ardent 60a rear. I find the Minion grips extremely well in places where it shouldn’t like wet, slippery and muddy conditions. I have always been confused by people that find the High Roller better in the wet as I personally find it lethal up front but that’s not to say they won’t be good for you! I live up in a very wet and muddy part of Scotland too!!! The trouble is that whilst Scotland is super wet and muddy, it also has an awful lot of rock and the Minion front is the best I have found to date.

I think you probably need to play around with the pressures a bit, but the minions should be fine in mud although not mud specific. I use minion DHF 2.35 60a on my Dialled Alpine front and back for all conditions. On the back I turned the tyre round to help climbing.

I find like all tyres they slide a bit but thats part of the fun in mud! They at least dont seem to subddenly break out.. I find about 30-35psi best for me. (Im about 80KG).

i have found that a combination of minion up front and high roller rear combo is the best way of getting down a hill fast..unless its particularly wet..then its out with the swampys/wetscreams…i dont do uphill…energy is for riding..not wasting

Single-ply 2.35 Minion 42a F and 2.35 HR 60a R here. They do work best for me mounted on on wideish rims (mine are DT 5.1d – 28mm wide) and get them cranked over. I also prefer them tubeless run at 28psi F/R on a 5″ full susser and I’m 14.5st. The Minion works well in the wet and runny mud and sticks to lots of stuff but clag gets them sliding about but then again they aren’t a mud tyre. Try a Swampthing on the front if you have Somme-like conditions but don’t expect hills to be fun. Run whatever the hell you like on the rear so long as it has enough tread to push you up the trail.

As with many Maxxis tyres the devil is in the compound! And if you have thick clarty mud a fat tyre will float rather than bite. I have scars to prove this.

To add to what others say above, I have run mixtures of Minions, High Rollers, Advantage, and more recently Ardent and I find them all grippy tyres in the wet, especially Minions and HR’s.

That said I jumped on a mates bike for a shot and was shocked at how little grip he had with his HR’s and when I got off he had them pumped up rock solid. I let them down a bit and they were transformed back to the grippy tyre that they are.

Today I did a loop at Afan White’s level on Maxxis Advantage tyres both front and rear and it gave excellent grip on the wet roots and rocks aswell through thick mud, I was impressed with it.

Yeh its pretty claggy just now . The front was sliding out quite dramatically which was giving the sphincter muscles a good work out.
I really like the rear though and although mine are 2.35 I think thats a tad optimistic so I don’t think its floating too much.I’m 16 1/2 stone so a proper clydesdale and should be pushing the tyre into the mud with the appropriate force.

Try a panaracer trailraker on the front, superb grip in the current sloppy conditions. Tried a variety of diff tyres and always go back to the trailrakers for predictable handling.

I’ll fiddle with the pressure a bit and see how we go.

if the pressures dont work…get a swampthing up front until it gets a little less claggy….it clears really well and grips good too..its the next step
