have you seen the documentary "Riding Giants"

Its a history of big wave surfing – but the bit about Mavericks is amazing

This one guy "discovered" it on his local patch – and surfed it alone for 12 years or so before other surfers caught on.

Then all the big name surfers came to try it with all the surfing press there etc- and one of the top Hawaiian guys got killed surfing it that same day

Try and find the picture of Jay Moriaty caught in the lip at Mavericks, one of the most iconic surf photos of all time. Halfmoon bay is a lovely place, when I went there (twice) it was as flat as a pancake. I hasten to add I would never ever try and surf it.

Yeah course I've seen riding giants, good thing about the sea in cali is they have lifeguards everywhere separate swimming and surfing and also helicopters combing the beach front. So hopefully drownings are rare for the size of waves they get.
