16 years, damn. I was only 17 when he died. Still remember hearing the news and reading the MBUK article.
Such an inspiration to me when I was young.
And man, I so wanted that Specialized... Azonic bars and stem, gnarly flats, carbon Judys... I'm pretty much sure it paved the way for the new breed of *ahem* hardcore hardtails. Straight after watching Dirt, hoards of us rushed out for riser bars and shin biters.
Stopped by the memorial on the Woodhead a couple of months back. Felt amazingly choked up standing at a memorial to someone I never met, in the dark, in the middle of nowhere.
The guy was an inspiration, and while i'd never come close to his racing prowess, vids like Dirt got me out of the house of a weekend and into the fells to go do stupid stuff on my bike, which was more the point, I reckon.

My bedroom wall was coated in photos of JMC and Co cut out of MBUK; ah those were the days. He was very inspirational and made me get out riding a lot back then.

Does anyone remember the tribute MBUK printed about JMC after his death? That was the best thing I've ever seen written in any MTB mag....
I have been trying to build a bike like that Specialized for years, never got it quite right though.

I still enjoy watching DIRT it because they seem to be having so much FUN aimlessly goofing about on bikes in T-shirts in the summer sun. It's the complete opposite of the take-it-seriously style of riding videos you get nowadays.
@buzz - true that... even in the later films like Chainspotting, it all just felt like a big holiday (maybe because it was...)

Exactly - it's so utterly rubbish and yet I still enjoy watching it because it's just fun.

Aye, he was a good'n. I used to ride with him & his brother in the early 90's, up the BMX track near the metro centre... Haven't been there in years but feel like I want to go back there now. 
God, Dirt too... I remember that all right! Was riding a purple & green Trek 7000 then.
We used to ride at the BMX track too...Chopwell in the morning, BMX in the afternoon.
Saw him and Paul Plunkett there once, their speed and skill was just astounding to the slightly stoned 17 year olds watching 
16 years! That means we all went to Whistler the same year, flew out straight after the Malverns. Found out he was dead when we got back. I think it was the same year that that lad was killed at the Malverns?
In my mind that's when all the innocence went out of the scene.

JMC was a great guy - he was a team mate of mine when I rode for Hardisty Cycles of Newcastle, before he got his big break getting onto the Specialized Factory Team
we used to go and ride all over the Newcastle area with the University MTB club and his mate Paul Plunkett, and sometimes go to Plunkett's house to ride his crazy garden setup
JMC was a rarity because he never let his success go to his head, he had time to speak to everyone, was very humble despite his awesome riding talent and ever growing fame in the MTB scene
a very sad day when we got the horrible news about his accident, but he made alot of people happy with his great attitude and friendship, gone but not forgetten

Not sure if there's a more complete version of the race, but even those clips are great to watch. Very different from what we now think DH is, but still phenomenal riding.
