Here's a couple of pics of our Ultra taking part in the 1990 (I think) Round the Island race. We were about half way round when we broke the mast driving into the back of a wave. Real pity as we were about 30 mins ahead of the monohul record at the time (slow nowadays!).
We ended up with a helicopter over us trying to winch everybody off - we didn't go and got towed back to Cowes by the coastguard instead. The next weekend we had a new mast and sailed from Cowes to Brighton to take part in the first televised event
[Pics look a little odd as they're phot's of framed pics]

Here's a few pictures of the boats I sailed on.
Babbalass - '94 Commodores Cup

Christie Cancer Care 1st Scottish Series Overall, 1st Dun Laoghaire Regatta 2009 as part of the Checkmate Sailing Team
Yes, we did drink in the Cornerhouse too.

Campaigend a 49er for 5 years on the UK circuit. (Not my picture, but nice anyway)

Another Ultra 30, this time David McLean. Haven't got any digital images though. Sailed the '98 series, the first with trapezes.
Loads more but can't find images.

Ha, hello Jeremy...... thought you mght surface
How are you matey? Was Babbalass #1 all that time ago?? Jeepers
Ted
Posted 1 year ago # -
It was indeed may moons ago Ted. Hadn't realized that you'd sailed with Glyn. Thought you were with Stu, Lawrie and Russel. So this is where you lurk these days. Have you heard Nipper's sad news?

ultra 30's now your talkin!! Awesome boats!
eremeber DBS from the coverage!! Think they sort of lost the way a little when they went trapeeze though?? still awesome mind!!Posted 1 year ago # -
While I remember, I also used to crew in these every week when I was abroad. They loved having me on as a dinghy sailor because I rushed around where all the yacht sailors were more chilled.

Loads of sailing in my family. My uncle skippered Bristol clipper in the 2002/2003 race, and my dad races a Sweden 42. Captainflashheart, did you own Mill bay? we have 2 (a laser and a GP14) boats there every year for 3 weeks

I'm a tart for a Six Metre:
...but a complete whore when it comes to ACs - got to spectate a while back:
no comment required:

Most recent campaign - slightly overpowered in more than about 24kts:

Finally, for a bonus point, can anyone identify the boat, and the name for the little metal zimmer frame around the canting keel ram release?

My uncle is lucky enough to have a small share in this. Beautiful old AC boat.

6 meters are Truely Stunning boats!!!
they had the champs in Fowey a fair few years ago, but Such lovely looking boats!
there used to be one of the original rigg'd ones up in plymouth, used to come down for the champs etc.is that one of the newer X-Yachts btw?? always been spritely boats!!!
Posted 1 year ago # -
Spokes, that's a beauty. 1950s or early 60s?
Timmo - that shot of the 7-ohs was from when we held the nationals at Fowey a few years back. Not enough wind on a couple of days, but the last couple was proper good - sunny, about f3-4 consistent and some of the best sailing I've ever had.
The X is an X35 I sailed out of Hamble for a year or so. Spritely is one way of putting it. Rather oversailed is another - very high aspect ratio rig, and I've no idea how X-Yachts ever managed to sell it as a cruiser/racer design, except to people who needed to persuade their family it wasn't an out and out racer.
I think the last sail I did on it was the delivery back from Dartmouth Regatta at the end of the season. Averaged 10kts with just the main up for the most part, with us two bowmen (long story) and two randoms as extra filler. On reflection, getting a nice big curry in for the trip back wasn't so bright - the randoms were pretty much instantly incapacitated by the smell of reheating onion samosas and the motion of the boat with 14kts up the bum and the main and kite up.

Bent Udder - could that be Full Pelt?
Posted 1 year ago # -
It's Sceptre, which is from 1958. A genuinely stunning boat.

BU,fowey was my home port!! up until i moved Deeper west a few years back! decided the hour racing of the gaunlet from West to south coast after work for an hour and halfs sailing in the eve's weas geting a bit much! falmouths my closest now at 20mins to 1/2hour straight across the county (north to south coast), spent prolly best part of 16 years racing from there, Lots of great sails!! Coming out the harbour in the 1/4 tonner, turning left, popping the kite, hitting the plane and not slowing till we had to drop it to get into plymouth! SW 5-6, Awesome!
is also nice to get a good F3 sea breeze on summer days!! and had some Silly blasts Out the bay in the winter series! (is around St.A bay brother and i used toi race the yachts in the 5oh when they kept the dingheys in 'for the spectators!!')loving the sound of the delivery!! especially the extra crew!!

Carbon - yep, Full Pelt 10. My pit girl sailed on her a fair bit, so they rafted on the outside of our mothership at Cork a few years back. Awesome boat. Got to speak to Jo a bit - thoroughly nice man as well as a stellar designer. I'm guessing you probably know the guys on that boat, from some of the stuff you posted earlier.
Spokes - wow. Your uncle is a lucky man.
Timmo - I'm jealous. Was that your compo or wooden 505 in the pics earlier? looks like a bundle of fun. We sprogged back in April, so my racing has been heavily curtailed, but I did get out for a day at Dartmouth this year. Sailing down West full time must be ace.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Aye. Hopefully one day I'll be able to have a go!
Posted 1 year ago # -
BU- Yeah the old 5Oh was a composite one! So much character compared to the new one! (still have the old one on pops patio lol! brother bought it when at school lol! so seemed wrong to get rid of it!! been in the family so long!!!) was showing signs of age though, but still didnt hang about!! the newer one's So much stiffer and more responsive, Such good boats to saiL!!!

The X35 is a lovely boat although a little 'trippy'. I did mainsheet on one (Nexus) for a couple of years - bit of a bandit in the light stuff.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Shark - cool. I was on Swallow, raced out of RSrnYC. We had some pretty mixed results, but won JOG. The boat had to go, unfortunately. Somewhere in Poland now. I was in the process of retiring from the foredeck and becoming an Aft Head, so was sailing pretty much every role...

I grew up in a family that sailed, I 'kin hated every minute of it.

pfft bloody pedestrians, there's a couple of drinks with my name on them here: Feadship Predator as I helped out the skipper with some new brakes for his audi

hmmm not sure about Predator.. that reverse bow is fugly!
Reverse bows look great on a catamaran.. not sure on a mega-yacht.

Crewed on both of these for the odd long weekend across to Belgium or the channel islands

The Donald Searle from the Bosun's Seat

A weekend Wayfarer trip from Cowes across the Solent back in my college days

DId a lot of Wayfarer sailing including my pre-entry assessment back in the day as well as toppers, lasers and raced an Enterprise with my mate on weekends at Littleton but we got bored quickly and would often cross the line backwards or do a MOB drill mid-race. Not sure what the old boys in their Solos thought of us

It is a full strip down of the paint and varnish and a couple of minor repairs. So one in her past used a thick slight red varnish on the deck and cockpit which made her very dark and hid the beauty of the wood so I have been stripping it off and it's defiantly a slow process. I do have some picks if you drop me an email I can send you a couple that may help.

Indeed. Every time I've been back it's become more and more grotty. There's not even a decent chandlery anywhere in town any more.
