IT’s all over – seen the back consultant today who has advised a second discectomy in a year, and then gone on to suggest that a fall i took in May was the most likely the cause. The missus is up in arms – so it looks the bike is going.
Anyone want to buy a lapierre zesty 214 in excellent condition?

ask every doctor you see to one says you will be fine what I did with my eye op.

    That really really really sucks

If you went to see a private doctor then go and see your GP. With all the cut backs the private clinics are coining it whilst all the national health consultants are saying you’ll be fine !

Don’t believe it, I burst a disc and can ride fine most of the time.

ant no doctor but if the person is a GP then they sadly dont know a lot about specific injuries.

id get second opinion as i have had problems before and went to NHS doctors/GPs and everything they said was rubbish when i went to a sport specific doctor or specialist.

so suggest you see someone who knows their field rather than general doctor, as they will ALLWAYS say “rest for a year, or give up if it persists”..
    hope it goes well

Mrs flap_jack was told she could never run after hers. She runs more now than she did before, and actually believes it makes her back stronger.

    Does LOTS of Pilates though.

    Thanks guys and gals.

This was the second opinion, unfortunately i have a compression of the nerves and have suffered nerve damage from the fisrt prolapse. It seems that i seem to be prone to this and scarring.

Stupid i can sit on the bike ok, i can pedal for hours – but walking is hell. The damage when i come off is disproportionate.

The first guys opinion was grin and bear it. |Hey ho.

    I agree with above .
But as its your second you will be worried .That pain is not nice.
Dont sell your bike yet give it time .
Ps the wife will probably buy you one anyway after a while if you stay at home all the time .
Good luck hope it comes good

Would that not be the first opinion then?

Cubed, by sitting on a bike you’re opening the vertebrae up and making more space for the spinal nerve roots . Would seem wee bit silly to stop biking, i’d be asking for a third opinion. 😀

The damage when i come off is disproportionate.

So don’t come off. Not that difficult surely? Maybe you have to reign back on what you do, but I very rarely come off, and I’m sure I could avoid it altogether if on doctor’s orders.

Having had one spinal fusion and two diseconomies, do not give up. Riding has no pressure on the main nerves in your legs that your damaged discs will have been compressing onl the movement is good for physio. A full sus takes much pain away.

In a nutshell, take what you are told with a pinch of salt, find out your capabilities by trying. Email me if you need more info as I was told the same as you, I took all advice on board but pushed my own limits after 3 operations. Cycling is a great recovery sport for back ops (within reason, I.e downhill and crashing not great for recovery)

Ps, the pain you suffer from walking is manageable if you have a good pain management program. Fortunately my wife is a pain specialist so I get free advice on hand. Like I say above, email in profile, help is at hand

As the others have said – get a second opinion. You have professional rugby forwards continuing after back surgery.

Back protection or pressure suit when out on the bike to mitigate the effects of falling off. Learn to go a bit slower or get off when the consequences of failure will be more damage.

Not that my problem’s the same as yours, and I’ve never had to have surgery, but I ruptured a disc in my back last year, pretty much had 6 months off life and best part of a year off mountain biking.

I had to ditch my Rockhopper frame and got myself a smaller, shorter Trek 4500 frame and an adjustable stem adjusted for a more upright position. I came back a month ago from cycling round Ghana and apart from the odd stiff day, my back’s fine.

Everytime I go the doctor with a new injury he tells me to pack the bike in especially in regard to the dislocated coccyx I’ve got. My view is I’ll stop when I really physically can’t ride anymore. Now I’m under a private doctor specialising in these things he reckons a few steroid jabs and I’ll be right as rain.

    Get a third opinion.

There is know way any doctor or anyone else can know for sure if a fall in May caused the problem (even that is when the pain started).

it may have happened fall or no fall, no way of knowing, the fact you have already had one incresaes the proberpility of it happening again. as a side point hope you don’t smoke, if you do might be be worth stopping, incresaes liky hood of disc problems (along with many others)

Have the surgery, get your back stength and function back to a high level and there is no reasion you should not be able to carry on with the mountain bike.

can ride a bike but can’t walk with out pain, so the sonsultant wants you to stop cycling!
Does some thing seem wrong with that?
health wise i would have thought you’d be better off getting regular exercise you can’t walk so that leaves cycling and swimming. The swimming would be good for your back, so you’d be better on the bike.
    sorted, next!
Oh and you best dtop falling off as well;-)

I reckon its his missus thats the real issue, make her aware that cycling is good for physio.
