   a comic book store has opened not so long ago that is localish to me.have wanted to go in and have a look,but i obviously don't know what i want to look for (it's been years since i last read a comic/well apart from the comic that came with the new deus ex game am drawn to the graphic novel side of things to be honest.have heard a lot of good things about alan moore's work.just really wondering where to start,what you might recommend (also any other authors) thanks

   At the back page and read towards the front.

   I was told after a rather baffling half hour trying to read one of the Japanese ones my son had bought the 'right' way round.

    Not so sure about Marvel Zombies, I think that works better if you're a fan of the Marvel Universe to start with. The Walking Dead is awesome, DMZ is really good, Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns (but again that works better if you know a little bit about Batman).

    Akira is really good, Moore's From Hell is hard going in places but well worth it.

    Blankets by Craig Thompson is great, as is Maus by Art Spiegleman, Jar of Fools by Jason Lutes...

    There really are loads.

    Oh and Calvin and Hobbes. I LOVE Calvin and Hobbes.

    well anything that have 'gaiman, miller, mignola, jim lee' written on the cover is a good bet.

    thanks for all the suggestions everyone flyingmonkeycorps i must admit to knowing some of batman's history (he is one of my favourite superheros/i blame the classic 60's series i watched growing up) i must admit to liking the character a lot more when i saw the first batman film (with big jack and beetlejuice keaton i liked the darker edge to his character.i am definitely going to get some of frank miller's batman novels EDIT i love most types of sci fi/fantasy.some of my favourite films range from the crow (which has to be my all time favourite film r.i.p brandon to the hulk,star wars,batman,alien films (well first 2 anyhoo) time bandits,labyrinth,the hobbit/lotr and various others.

    You'll love The Dark Knight Returns then, same for Year One. Arkham Asylum is pretty amazing too.

    You do know The Crow was a graphic novel first right?

    flyingmonkeycorps i must admit that i did,but only after buying the special edition crow dvd.there was a bonus documentary about the creator of the crow character.the poor guy watched his girlfriend get killed by a drunk driver from that he came up with the character of the crow.i must check out his novels (how did i forget about him DOH!

    Akira isn't a comics, it's a manga. Probably one of the very first mainstream manga where characters actually look like japanese... But a manga nontehless

    anything you can find by Vaughn or Mark Bode.. just for the originality of the artwork if nothing else..

    Vaughn's been dead for many years now but the stuff he was doing in the '60s truly changed the world..

    Seriously puts the mainstream formulaic stuff to shame..

    Here's some to get on with.

    The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller cannot be avoided - possibly the best graphic novel ever written.

    The Joker - ‘Devils Advocate’

    Batman - ‘A Death in the Family’

    Any of ‘The Grendel Tales’

    Night Raven - ‘House of Cards’

    Marshall Law - ‘Fear and Loathing’

    Turf - Jonathan Ross’s foray into comic writing.
