been looking at the ioid for a while now as my hoo koo e koo is getting a bit tired. hoping to commute into winter, anyone got one or suggest an alternative. first time poster

Well I've got an iOID 8 Speed and 18 months into our relationship, I'm still in love! Fork due a service and other than that, I can't recall any maintenance I've done to it! I ride it more than my Five (although I love her too!!) which gets used for more serious riding.

I had the single speed one and an alfine on another bike. both where fantastic.
The frame is one of the best i've ridden and still would be if it wasn't for big wheels.

I bought one last week from ukbikesdepot.co.uk for £1170. Considering I sold my Epiphany to fund it, this was one hell of a risk!.
The bike has completely helped my re find my mojo as well as remind me about good old honest riding. The Alfine hub is mint (dispite looking like something from the 50s), changes are silent and slick as well as being somewhat novel to the traditional geared mechs.
Weight wise it is spot on, I would say circa 27.5lbs and the reynolds 520 tubing is one serious comfortable ride. Spec is OK, and the 2011 Deore brakes look great and well outperform their name. This is a bike you can throw away mucky and not worry about it.
Bars are cronic and too short and the seatpost is cheap. I upgraded to some 710 bars and added a polished alloy Ritchey Classic seatpost to match the stem, tyres may also welcome a change from the notorious mountain kings, all these you can get some cash for on fleabay.
Finally I am a 19" man all the way, but had to opt for the 20.5", definately need to get one sized up before purchase, and get the price drove down!

I have an IOID and really like it. Mainly used as a commuter but its been out in the dirt a good few times as well.
to me its just a bike - it just does what a bike should do. Simply reliably and with no fuss.

Have had my ioid Alfine 8 for two years now. I ride it to work everyday and I've never had any problems with it. Being able to change gear while standing still makes me feel like a magician. Great bike for off road to really tight and responsive. Best hardtail bike I've ever owned by a country mile.

Had/have one but all the parts are on an 853 Inbred, so the 19" frame, seat post and saddle are for sale if you fancy? Mine was an 8sp and I found the frame 19" size a little small for myself.
Standard brake pads were dire so I replaced with some superstar organics and they've been far better.Posted 8 months ago # -
I had the idea of the Alfine 11 low maintenance ideal on-off road commuter earlier this year - however after a not a lot of use the Alfine is now back with the importers with a dead second gear. It does not seem that I'm alone in having problems either. I would be interested to hear any other stories of success or failure of 11 speeds from other STW'ers. The 8 speed seems more reliable though, perhaps go for one of those instead?

I got my IOID 8sp Ex Hire from Glentress for £500 which worked out at £370 on Cycle to Work
Sadly The Hub is closing soon but you may still be able to pick up a Alfine bargin.

I was speaking to Bothy Bikes earlier today and they recommend sticking with the 8 speed. They've had a couple of 11-speeds which have just died - one in just over a week - so there are still some reliability issues to be sorted first. The 8-speed has been rock solid for years.

I have the 8 speed. Over two years old now but as smooth as day one. Anyone ridden both the 8 and the 11. How do they compare??
