An interesting (I hope!) topic today. Moments in history. Things which defined a sport, made a mark beyond just sport or just somehow lodged themselves in your own personal history.

John Cobb (on right below), motorist extraordinary.

Cobb lived, his life largely in the shadow of Campbell and Parry-Thomas. He finally claimed the world land speed record in 1938 driving at 350 mph in a twin-engined Lion Napier Car at Bonneville Salt Flats; After the war he increased his record speed to 394 mph Cobb was killed trying to break the water speed record at Loch Ness in 1952.

Twenty-four litres (two litres per piston), rated output of 530bhp.

Flying Ox – is that Pikes Peak – the strory of Michelle Mouton turning up with an Audi, being roundly ridiculed by all the old boys with their v8 specials for only having 2.2 litres and a saloon car, being banned from driving in the pits and then setting a course record always makes me smile.

Great stuff so far, folks! Love the Millar and Edwards ones. The latter didn’t even look at the pit. He just knew it was massive.

A very interesting photo this, for lots of reasons. 🙂

Putting aside any of the many issues, Hillary was an unassailable hero to several generations of New Zealanders, imo above any of the AB’s. One of the few sportsmen whose greatest achievements were after his sporting days were pretty much over.

True, why make a fuss over something that’s done anyway? I was never one to obsess about the past. Too much to do in the future!

oh, and to lower the tone, Australian sportsmanship

Kevin Schwantz and Wayne Rainey – Transatlantic Races

Not especially historic but it was these races that fuelled my love for motorbike racing.
Dave Thorpe , Rob Herring – motocross legends. Same reasons as above.

    Pace. Pure, brilliant pace.

Along with the likes of Garner, Sobers, Holding and Ambrose, Marshall defined an era of world cricket.

Moss and Jenks in the ’55 Mille Milgia. A thousand miles at an average speed of around 98mph on public roads with refueling. Beat that Surf Matt.
