  • External storage hard drive fail – know a good data recoverer?

Disconnected my Lacie Neil Poulton 1TB external from my Mac this morning and now the Mac doesn’t appear to recognise the hard drive.

The external is not making any nasty noises (not the click of death I’ve had before) which says to me that the disk itself should be OK, but when firing up it seems to halt at the final hurdle and keeps on repeating, very similar to a car not quite turning over. The external light flickers when this is happening, but is constant when disconnected.

Obviously it needs taking apart as I can’t access it as it is.

On which note, does anyone know any good data recoverers that aren’t going to sting me for over £300?

    Basically either:

    a) you just need to swap the actual drive into a new enclosure, and this will be pretty cheap (I’d just DIY it, normally pretty easy, £10-20 for a new enclosure.).

    of

    b) the drive itself is knacked in someway and it needs expensive recovery and this will cost £££

I’m sorting out a caddy to check out the first option.

Which is what I’m hoping it is…
