  • Electrolyte Tablets – When to drink them?
  • chrisdw
    Free Member

Just got myself a couple of tubes of the High5 Zero tablets after trying a free sample a while ago.

Not quite sure when is the best time to drink them though.

Is it best to dissolve it in a glass and drink before riding? Or is it better to stick one in my CamelBak and progressively drink whilst riding?

I use them before and also during and after. When doing half marathons I sip them for the 24hrs before to build up a good level for during the race/crawl!

Firstly, they are great for hangovers.

Mainly I chuck one in my bladder if I’m going for a long ride or if it’s hot or if I’ve been doing a few miles or if I might get cramp.

    They are great.

    As mentioned, phenomenal for hangovers.

Depends on how I’m feeling. Sometimes, I’ll have one before I go riding (depending on how much I’ve had to drink the night before) and sometimes I’ll pop one in a couple of litres of water if I’m going out for >2hrs. Less than that, and I’d rather use squash. Bit cheaper…

I use them in my camelbak.
I only put one in 2 – 2.5 litres – any more and I wee alot.
For long rides I stick an extra one on the lid of the camelbak ,
for when I top up with water.

They do work , great for hangovers but dioralyte works just as well imo.

The new Nuun Lemon Tea is the best for hangovers. Research has proven this…

the High 5 with caffeine ones really rock. Particularly for hangovers. When you get in, chuck the manky bit of cabbage and last few mouthfuls of pitta from your kebab in the bin, eat one of these tabs. Ideally with water, but without if you can’t be bothered. Proper blaz.

1 per bottle on road rides over an hour or so – they say 1.5 per 750ml, but 1 does the trick for me to keep cramps away. I don’t bother on mtb, just have water in Camelbak to keep it clean and keep on munchin on snacks..

1 nuun tablet before I go out for a ride, water in a camelback during and if I feel dehydrated I will have another half tab when I get back.

Good for hangovers you say. Well that will help me out no end in two weeks when I am skipping up Snowdon and the others are trudging up moaning about drinking too much.

    Thanks guys.

Why are you all so addicted to alcohol? With your coping techniques you sound like a bunch of heroin addicts. It least they usually have the genuine excuse of poverty. If you feel the need to abuse alcohol it,s because your lives/society needs to change.Fight to change that and do your livers a favour.

    ^^ this

There is some salt in them to encourage you to keep drinking. I find the normal tabs are pretty good when it’s hot/sweaty and the caffeinated tabs are also most excellent if you’re not immune to caffeine.

Why thank you, I do manage to balance my life with my meagre sporting ambitions quite well, but it is nice when others recognise my achievements.

Now if only I could find some way of reducing the forearm cramps from my internet porn addiction.

@monkeycmonkeydo I hope that is a troll but I’ll chomp anyway. An occasional hangover isn’t having an alcohol problem and if you think top athletes don’t have more than a few drinks occasionally you’re an even bigger fool.

@MSP I prescribe zinc tablets for that

Ha ha ha! Check you out! Even a couple of pints can induce dehydration and a hangover, you know…. Hardly abuse…

A Hangover is alcohol poisoning. Why bother riding bikes to get healthy and then damaging yourselves? You indulge in alcohol abuse because you are brainwashed to believe that it is acceptable and fun.Try facing life sober. If you can’t,ask yourself why not.Are you really any different from those Welfare scrounging benefit claimants, who you all denounce?

Monkey – Fun. No, I did my own research and found beer to taste nice and drinking it to be fun. That’s Monday to Friday and mornings. I can, I choose not to. What have ‘welfare scrounging benefit claimants’ got to do with it? (your words not mine).

Think that answered your questions. Please put a space after your punctuation marks as it makes your post easier to read, also this thread’s not really about alcohol abuse is it.

Edit – Or in short, what I_Ache said ^

So, back on topic, I drink electrolytes during a ride, but I think you can drink them before and after if you want.

Love how this thread has just deteriorated into a slinging match 😆

I just use half a tab with around 250mls of water before heading out and sip water (500 mls) from my hydration during my 2 hour ride.

Generally hydrate with weak juice concentrate when I get in. Can tell how hydrated you are by the colour of your pee.

My top tip – dissolve the tablet in a little boiling water first, before adding cold water. Tastes soooo much better.

As for the alcohol thing. I don’t drink. My bike is a much better place to spend the money and I never wake up feeling crap. Alcohol just doesn’t make sense really.

From what I am reading you are the one dolling out the abuse by calling us alcoholics and saying we are as bad as heroin addicts. Maybe the mods should do something about you. Now I have never mugged a granny or anybody else for that matter, I havn’t stolen a car or sold my parents kidneys so I can go to the pub.

There is no argument for anybody to loose, I can respect your view until you start pushing it down our throats like a mad jihadist. You don’t seem to be able to respect anybody elses views on the subject. So as I said before. Cock Off!

Oh and the reason why I ache is because I have fallen off my bike too many times not because I may or my not drink too much.

Its best to double up the number of tablets when using them with cider. One tab to counteract the dehydration from the cycling, and one for the drinking.
Don’t forget to take a couple of swigs from your tinny before dropping the tabs in or it fizzes up too much and you spill your drink.
If its a decent size flagon of a nice flat cider, like Old Rosie, its best to have a good big slurp first. then drop in about 6 tabs- you’ll be fine till lunchtime when the pub opens.
Experiment with the flavours- the orange and ginger ones really compliment a sharp, rough grog; but the citrus ones can add a bit of kick if your cider’s too sweet. Have a slice of lemon in it too, mmmmmmmm.
If it’s getting dark, its best to use the ones with a bit of a caffeine kick to help you get home. Don’t want to fall off. Save a couple for the morning though to get you started again.

I try not to get involved in tiffs like this but Jesus I’ve never read such sanctimonious drivel!
Monkeyc, u choose not to drink, good for you, that’s your decision. Other people choose to drink, that has absolutely no bearing on the fact that they also like to ride bikes for enjoyment, I’m sure many Olympic athletes also ENJOY (that’s a key word right there) a drink now and again, would you compare them to ” doley heroin addicts”? Prob not I’d guess unless everyone on the planet who likes a few drinks have been “brainwashed”
I like a few beers when the mood takes me, whether that’s a Friday night after a hard week in work ( that’s right I actually EARN my beer money, don’t get in the dole que for it) or with a meal sat or any other night I choose. If I didnt feel like a drink I wouldn’t have one, simple. In fact I’ve just put the kettle on so I’ll just end by saying I like my electrolyte tabs in the camelbak when I’m riding (sober – sometimes!) and cherry/orange rock!

Didn’t CRC pop a few Nuun tablets in their parcels not so long ago? Bet they deal smack out of the back of the warehouse too! 😉

I don’t really drink bar the half pint shared with riding mates after our Thursday night ride. I don’t mind how often anyone else does either as I am not self obsesse3d enough to think that my opinion on the matter is worth more thn a “huh”.
I think you’re a bit of a nutter monkeyc; if we were on the bus I’d be getting off to wait for the next one right about now.
Electrolyte for me goes in camelback for longer rides. I’m rather partial to the one a mate has given me a stash of that comes in the new MOD ratpacks; a sort of turbocharged version of screech for those of you who remember that. Shame you can’t buy it ‘legitimately’. There monkey, have aa go at me for steling MOD property….

Quite happy to be middle class to be honest.

I think its typical of a brainwashed zombie to not be able to form their own opinions. Brainwashed zombies just spout whatever they have been told to during their brainwashing just like you seem to be.

Anyway I am fed up with you now I think you have said enough to prove that you are indeed an idiot and my job here is done.
