If you had something on the classfieds advertised at £40 new and were then advised that you could buy the same item brand new from a well known German chain for £16.90 with manuf. warranty etc, what would you do??
1) Bury your head in the sand and refuse the sale at less than you're asking for?
2) Accept the offer and suck it up, knowing you're not going to get what you want for it anyway?
I realise there's no obligation to sell, just as there is no obligation to buy, but I do wonder why some people dont do a bit more reasearch, either that or they're trying to catch out the unwary with a "bargain" that clearly isn't.

3) sell it to suckers on ebay instead
Posted 7 months ago # -
anybody with 2 brain cells would get it new from Germany...
Less than half price; warranty; dealing with legal company in EU... hmm...
Posted 7 months ago # -
Yep. 3) for sure!
eBay is a sellers market.

Not in stock, though.

Out of interest are those BBs compatible with all the HTII stuff?
Been used to Octalink where it isn't

Sometimes the classifieds make me chuckle on the prices listed. It's almost like the posters do not realise the classifieds is attached to a mountain bike forum, where people actually know what things are worth.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Ah that'll be that BB that I noticed yesterday.
Like you, I thought "that's more than double the current price from Germany".
I was tempted to post a response advising the seller of that (despite having no current interest in purchasing one) but decided it was better left for anyone who might be interested to challenge/offer as they saw fit.Caveat emptor

Wait until its out of stock then relist it on here.
Posted 7 months ago # -
In fairness Rose charge £5 postage, so that's £21.90, so he's asking for less than double?
Posted 7 months ago # -
'spoon, and that makes a difference because?
Posted 7 months ago # -
If you don't need to sell it, for the sake of a few beer tokens, just hang onto it I say.
I find the classifieds here strange at the best of times, some stuff people seem to pay way over the odds for, with others queueing to buy, yet other stuff priced well below what it sells for elsewhere being re advertised day after day.
Posted 7 months ago # -
There was a reverb around yesterday for 225 + postage. CRC is 230 with postage - difficult decision that one.
Posted 7 months ago # -
the only time I might comment on classifieds pricing is if the same item has been advertised for a long time with no offers and then I'll try and be constructive, saying a bike shoudl be split or something.
There was a guy selling a specialized a year or two back who posted it for months as an 'urgent sale due to car accident in family' - a lot of people pointed out he was asking too much and made suggestions as to how to secure a sale - he got quite shirty. He sold it through his local paper in the end I think.
There were some XT brakes for sale yesterday which someone started posting comparisons with Rose bikes on.

It annoyed me somewhat as his attitude to me was "go to german shop then, as im not selling for that!"
I pointed out that I could also get an item with full manuf warranty for half what he wanted, I was told Shimano dont warranty their BBs. BS!It really grips my shit that some people on here only use the classifieds and are borderline traders IMO.

What's wrong with that?

TBH, if I was selling something and someone commented that they could get the item new from a different company my (and your) response would be 'well you'd be stupid not to buy it new cheaper so why bother posting/emailing this?'
You would wouldn't you? Otherwise why would you hilight it to the seller? If its an ulterior motive as you know its out of stock or you can't be assed getting it new then its a cheap-attempt at low-balling.
If I was selling say a frame and someone posted up saying 'look its the same price here in a UK shop' I'd pull down the frame and wait abit then readvertise.
Then there is the low-balling with no reason 'would you sell me the nearly new MINT CNT/carbon bars for £28'?
Thats when it gets insulting.
Posted 7 months ago # -
either that or they're trying to catch out the unwary with a "bargain" that clearly isn't.
that. Nothing wrong with that mind and TBH I've decided not to sell something previously when it was pointed out that you could get the same item new for not a lot more than I was asking as it wasn't really worth the hassle and I'd prefer to just keep the part instead.

To be fair Hora if you're getting insulted about a lowball offer in the classifieds then you're doing it wrong. People will always try and barter people down a bit on price and as the seller it's your job to try and haggle back up. The worst you can do is say no, there's no point in getting offended.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Chap with the XT brakes sold them for his asking price anyway, so he was right to say go to Rose if you wanted. Whoever posted about Rose (I assume) were after more of a bargain, but he batted that haggle away to the boundary and got what he wanted anyway. Fair play to both, but that's the way it works. In this instance he 'won'.

Wow, he's persistent. I normally list three times at most, then go over to ebay if I really want to sell it.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Why is it a fast buck? People will only pay/buy at a price secondhand that they feel comfortable with. If its too much no one will buy.
JonR - agree but the bars in question were over £100 new. Offering £28+post for bars that I was hoping for £60 posted? I'd expect someone to say '£50'/50% of RRP then (which is fair and logical haggling).

Yeah I see your point - though on some forums 'price-pointing' is strictly forbidden and results in warnings/bans.

Sorry to interject, but what's this 'German Shop'?
Posted 7 months ago # -
Okay, that is a little cheeky but I would have thought an unequivical no and maybe some sort of withering comment about what he should be aiming for with that sort of budget and your done. I'm glad I paid the asking price for those king wheels I bought off you now.

Just to point out, i'm not justifying prices here... but, is it not a case of supply and demand?
Bloke wants £40 for an item he has ready to post out.
Shop has it for £20....but they have no stock.Do you need the part? If yes, you pay for what you need. If not, wait til its in stock and get one then.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Skippy' - thats another thing that annoys me (grrr) - shops with crazy low prices that get them high up on google but then magically don't have the stock or.....it comes up at a higher price when you click through.
On the first one- the big sellers are the worse offenders.

Yes I do need a BB, but not at any price. I bought an XT one yesterday instead from Rose.
I'll buy bling if its at a decent price, but I'll quite happily buy functional gear too.Posted 7 months ago # -
LOL @ ww.
Youd have thought he'd have got round to swapping the freehub over by now...
