   I've had a shocker of a day at work and thought (again, you may remember) that I might not be happiest doing the job I'm currently doing.

   Anyway, I filled in the online 'directgov' questionnaire that looks at what you like, what you're good at etc. I thought it was going well. I thought I was definitely in the wrong career and I was certain to end up as a Lion tamer or tank gunner. However ...

   .... it told me to do the job I'm already doing.

   Pfft. What do you do when there's nothing you want to do? I think I'd like to be a bon-vivant or (heterosexual) man-about-town.

   I'm in the same situation, and all the career advice things also always tell me to do something very similar to what I'm doing now. My solution has been to tell work I'm leaving (admittedly very - 1 year - in advance, but necessary to avoid messing loads of people around) as I figured otherwise I will just stay in this job where it's okay and never get around to leaving.

   I am now planning a bike trip from Alaska down the west coast of north America to focus on that, rather than the slightly scary prospect of being unemployed (with no idea what I want to do) and with no place to live!

   perhps I should let you all know that work is basically sh1t and you would rather be doing something else ..does that help ?

   I'm under no illusions that those annoying people who like work so much "it's not like going to work" are few and far between and that for the majority of us, it's a case of MTFU and getting on with it.

   I just wish there was a job I wanted to do so much that I could work towards it, but there isn't!

   One option that assessment offered me was Body Piercer.
   Interestingly it didn't offer me anything in IT, which is what I do now.

   Most people think that in order to achieve happiness they need to change to something entirely different.

   In reality, something very similar but with a few bits changed does the trick.

   Hmm...did the test and afterwards it just lists loads of jobs under the differing sections. Was hoping it would just pop out Astronaut and off i would go.

    I remember Mr Illingworth, our 5th form tutor giving our us a careers advice talk. It went like this.

    "You can stay at Grammar school for 6th form, get good A levels, go to university and get a great job.

    Or you can go to sixth form college."

    Interestingly, that survey didn't suggest the job I actually do, but it did include scene of crime officer and pet behaviour counsellor. Perhaps I should combine the two.

    You know, life is short, no point doing something you don't want to do.

    I ended a career in sales because I had enough of pretending I liked people I have nothing in common with, selling products I didn't give a hoot about. A choice greatly helped by not having kids or a mortgage.

    Best thing I ever did. Still in education 6 years later, living a fairly frugal lifestyle but riding my bike nearly every day. In fact, off out into the sunshine now

    Only problem is, I graduate next year........how will I motivate myself to do 9 - 5 again? No regrets though. You should jack it in, sell candles to pilgrims at Lourdes or something. Nice and close to the Pyrennees.

    Well got to say that wasn't very useful....for me it's pulled up 12 groups, each with on average 25 jobs...nice way to narrow things down
