Earlier today I got a knock on my door from the landlord's agent who informed me the level of noise I produce is unacceptable. They have, allegedly, received a complaint from another flat's resident. Funny thing is, my floorstanders aren't even connected as the amp is being fixed. Never knew how much sound my whining on this forum makes.
The landlord says he knows nothing, I've just spoken to him. What the hell?
I suppose the current Irish "heatwave" (AKA 13 deg. Celsius) is melting somebody's brain cells.

I noticed this morning that my neighbour's normally immaculate garden is looking a mess and I've not seen or heard him in a while.
It occurred to me about an hour ago that he may have had an accident. Will go and check when I get home.
If his car windscreen is covered in shite I shall start to worry.

Go round and have a nice chat with the neighbours. Apologise profusely and ask why they didn't just ask you directly to keep the noise down?

Maybe they spotted the floorstanders moving in and have put in a pre-emptive strike! (genuinely believe that loud stereo systems, especially floor standing setups that seem to transmit noise really well, don't belong anywhere but a detatched property, but it's unreasonable if you've not been playing it loud! Are you sure you've not been making a noise even in the last few months.

How many neighbours do you have, could it be mistaken ID? When we moved in to our new place we got a letter about 6 weeks in saying "There has been a complaint about your dog barking, we'd like to meet to discuss it with you". We've never owned a dog, but every other sod in the street has one that goes nuts at the slightest sound/person/movement and triggers a barking avalanche. Wonder who it was that complained?!

There are 29 flats here in total, most are empty during the day as people go to work. The sound carries (I can hear my mate's R.E.M.'s album and he lives on the other side of the block), but I wouldn't complain about it at this time of a day.

With regard to the OP's situation, if the complaining party can't provide times and dates of when you were making an unreasonable amount of noise I can't see what they can do about it.

this comment doesn't really logically make much sense although I can see what you're getting at..
a good quality powerful system with appropriate floorstanders should allow you to enjoy to music at lower volumes without losing any detail.. negating the need to turn it up unneccesarily
