Off for a look. Never seen them when I’ve been in Sweden or Finland so this could be a bonus.

Bit cloudy here too, and the neighbour’s secrity lights aren’t helping. might have a walk up the hill later.

once saw the northern lights in the middle of grizedale forest, brilliant. Staying in the bunkhouse on the inaugural IMBA meet, been down to hawkshead for a pint and when we cam back it was all over. Fab.

Saw a spectacular aurora in Finland many years ago. Lying on our backs in a snowfield, half the sky was lit up with blues, greens and reds. Just incredible.

We were right in the middle of nowhere (80 miles inside the Arctic Circle) so no light or air pollution.

This is a feel good thread – nice pics bigG, what settings etc did you use or did you just get lucky?

Yoshimi, there was some planning and thought used..

I used a Sony compact digital DSC H55, short focal length and the longest exposure I could get (30secs). It was secured to my car roofbars with a gorillapod tripod thing. It’s not a professional set up, but it seems to work.

If it’s clear tonight I might head out for another go at aurora pics, apparently just after dark is the best forecast.
