My Gx derailleur bit the dust so was thinking of replacing it with an XT instead which is cheaper, and if internet people are to be believed the clutch is better.

I have an eagle cassette 52t and see the shimano only goes to 51t.
will it work or will I die etc.

I’ve got 2 mtbs with xt rear mechs and 52t Garbaruk cassettes. Both run fine, the odd back pedal can slip the chain off the big ring but isn’t usually a problem.

I’ve got X01 and GX 10-52 cassettes running perfectly well with XT and Deore mechs. They back pedal better in the largest sprocket than than the 10-51 slx cassette on my spare wheelset.
