Would you buy a Landcruiser?

millennium falcon replica
Assumed you meant a 2000 Ford Falcon for a minute 😂
aphex_2kFree MemberGoing to look at it some time this week when my Focus has had the brakes done.
There’s might be better deals but they sell in days, and they won’t have a shmick camper trailer with them. If this falls through then so be it, Two weeks ago we weren’t even in this position so no buy, no problemo.
aphex_2kFree MemberSo it all kinda fell through.
Turns out the camper trailer was valued in 2020 at $22k kinda peak Covid and when prices were high.
I asked how much is the trailer worth now… Seems to be around 6-8k so that makes the car 22-24k and not actually such a great deal at all. Also the wife said she would never drive a manual. So that’s a thing now I wasn’t aware of.
Fortunately there’s a few V8’s and TD’s to look at. Some have had engine replacements so say 300k on the body and 200k on a new motor. 5 speed auto too with much better options and some even have fridges / drawers and compressors added. Genuine TD’s are scarce (well in high demand) but I’ve seen a few petrol and diesels with added turbo / new exhausts.
So playing the long game now. Looking at a 2004 v8 5 speed auto, replaced engine with 200k on Weds night. Unfortunately he works days so I’ll need me torch. Says body work and paint all good. No leaks in the engine bay and full service hx and a stack of receipts. Was hoping to have something sorted this week but we’ve slowed right down and being wise.
RustyNissanPrairieFull MemberDon’t rush into it – finding unicorn cars takes time / lots of viewings / luck.
I forgot a out this guy previously – he waffles on a bit but has done various LC rebuilds. Might give you an idea what to look for.
timberFull MemberOr watch The Skid Factory on you tube and they’ll convince you to buy whatever’s cheap, then fit a turbo LS3 engine and auto box 😄
mrjmtFree MemberOut of interest how come you’ve ruled out the prado? For your use it’s ideal?!
I’ve got a 2006 Prado 120 (the 4l v6 petrol, GXL spec so centre diff lock only), the previous owner seemed to have an ARB fetish, dual battery, roof tray, dual awnings, front bar with winch, old man emu suspension. I had a pathfinder before this and the prado is miles apart. Also our use has changed because of having it, we do a lot more outdoors, camping, kayaking etc now that we have it.
I’ve always wanted a 100 series but can’t see that happening unless the prado properly dies, but I’m hoping it goes on forever.
Either way to answer your original question, of course you should get one!

Yes he’s from Perth actually. I watch the whole series on the 105 he had rebuilt in South Africa. Lovely looking motor. He’s got some $$ that guy. But he does waffle. Interesting watching his vids as he often drives along the coast roads not far from me.
I haven’t completely disregarded a Prado but I don’t get the same feels from a Prado or a Paj as Landcruisers give me… It’s odd. But I’ve watched so much stuff about them and their history I feel I probably would have the regrets big time if I didn’t get one. Hard to look past their rep!
Anyhoo…. It seems that if I’m wanting an auto, and a 5 speed at that, it’s the V8 (shucks). The 4 speed auto is apparently solid, but the gears are long and many have said the jump from 1-2 and from 2-3 is long. Turbo diesels are few and far between and quite a bit more. I’ve got a budget of $20k. I have to pay govt charges (around $700) when I purchase the car. Registration is also around $700 so if I find a car at a dealer then I’ve got some haggling. I did see a v8 today which had just been added to the car site but no pics. But they want $24k and they said it’s a fixed price no discount. I said I’ve never bought a car and paid the price they were asking, so politely said I’d go elsewhere.
Wednesdsay is gonna be busy. 😀 But also I’m in no rush now….Slow ‘n’ steady aye?
quentynFull MemberI would be only the facelift version as the older model hasn’t been updated inside for quite a while – which means no android auto or apple car play.
I like them but for me I wouldnt consider one that didn’t have the updated head unit
RustyNissanPrairieFull Member“I like them but for me I wouldnt consider one that didn’t have the updated head unit”
I’m clacking about in a 955 Cayenne with an outdated non iPlay head unit. Quality replacement double or single din android MOST compatible headunits are <£500 from either established Japanese players or newer Chinese upstarts.
Porsche have brought out a modern direct replacement buts it’s £1400. A headunit wouldn’t really sway me if the car itself was good.

That’s not at all what it means.

I’m not gonna disregard a decent car on the fact the head unit won’t play with my phone nicely. To me that’s a personal add on / upgrade which would be upgraded in due course – I’d want a decent unit with the rear camera option too.
As long as it’s got electric windows, cruise control and decent air con I’m not looking for heaps of buttons and dials to fiddle with.
Went to look at one this morning as I saw it at 2am last night after my PM shift. Drove 50 mins to the city and realised I’d entered the wrong car yard address. So drove 45 mins to the correct place. Saw the car in the back. Guy said it was sold and “maybe I didn’t clear my cookies”. Meh. Tried to sell me a Patrol. Not intertested.
3aphex_2kFree MemberErr…I mean.. .Everyone needs a v8 once in their life, right?
Hello fuel pump. Can we be fwens?
4.7l v8. One owner from new. Huge service history and receipts. 244,000kms. Pick up Weds. We’re allowed to make mistakes if we learn from them… 😜
RustyNissanPrairieFull MemberNice! Ive googled that engine – reckons ~18mpg. My 3.2 V6 is thirsty but when they are 2nd/3rd vehicles and only used for holidays/adventures then it’s not an issue, also less to go wrong than a diesel.
Canning Stock Route next weekend?
1aphex_2kFree MemberMaybe the weekend after… I need to save up for fuel 😉
There’s a bit of work that needs doing but probably not too much of an issue (bit of rust around top of widescreen edge, common problem and can be fixed). Will get rid of the winch and take out the third row seats to drop a bit of weight. Yeah I know I probably need shares in BP but! (I just realised I typed “but” at the end of the sentence – a very WA thing to do!!)
Picking up tomorrow. Was expecting to be shafted for insurance but the quote was $550 for the year with roadside assistance – which hopefully won’t need to be used. At least, not tomorrow anyway!
RustyNissanPrairieFull MemberI thought of this thread when this popped up on my Youtube feed the other day (but I couldn’t be bothered using the STW search to find it!)
RustyNissanPrairieFull MemberRegarding the winch and 3rd seats – the winch especially, if it’s a decent sized winch wound with steel wire (rather than dyneema) the previous owner may have sprung the car accordingly to account for the added weight. Removing the winch could upset the handling/ride height……and saving 100kgs isnt going to improve your economy by much🤣
aphex_2kFree MemberYeah in the grand scheme of things. I just figure it’s like carrying a chunky mate in the passenger seat for every journey. 😀
Winch is an old Toyota one, steel braided cable I believe so would weigh a bit. Shocks are stock and I doubt consideration to spring/dampers would have been made – but I can’t confirm. It’s a factory Toyota bull bar but I don’t know if it’s ally or steel). But no point lugging it round
I’ll watch the vid when I’m home tonight – surprisingly it’s one I don’t believe I’ve watched yet!
4aphex_2kFree MemberWell, a couple of months in. Still very happy.
$100 a week to fill up. Work 4x per week and some weekend runs out bush with the bikes. It’s not going to save the planet, let’s just say that. I get around 600km from the main tank. I’ve never been flush enough to fill the main and sub tank so still not a clue how much full tanks will cost me. But I’m going >600km a week short to medium runs.
Replaced lights to LED (apart from main/dipped which is still standard halogen) as the standard lights are so bad. Ultimately I see a completed headlight upgrade.
The IPF spotlights were full of dust and heavily corroded. Managed to get another set of IPF lights for $30! (Not fitted yet).
Car’s had a full service. Two things need doing – rear CV boot split. Steering rack worn. Quoted me $1650 for a new rack and $450 to fit. After a little shopping I found a rack, new with warranty for $633. Confirmed it was the right one and told it was a good price, go for it, he’s happy to fit it. Otherwise mechanic said it was very clean and tidy and doesn’t appear to have been thrashed on the beaches.
It’s very nice to drive. I feel more relaxed, less in a hurry to get somewhere. It’s crap with fuel, I knew that from the start, but I like it.
1aphex_2kFree MemberI hadn’t really noticed, prior to being an owner, but there’s bloody loads of them on the road!
I still browse FB. Surprising amount of 80 Series out there, 10-15k (I actually like the look of the 80 series more so than the 100 but shh don’t tell her).
