Well, I just used surplus savings from 2012 as an overpayment on the mortgage leaving 0, yes zero bike fund.

I know this is “sensible”, but it doesn’t feel very fulfilling. No point with “what bike” threads, only staring at new shiny kit reviews with starry eyes….

Surplus savings implies there are other savings in other accounts – just raid those!

But with no mortgage to pay, you can accumulate a new fund even quicker!

Kryton, I feel your pain, we’ve just moved, downsized – we ploughed most of the equity into the new mortgage. There are some monies ‘left over’ – only on pain of death do I dare approach the topic of spending on ‘bike bits’….. 🙂
Edited to add a smiley for those perhaps taking this too seriously 😉

Hold on blisterman, you miss understand me – an “additional” mortgage payment, I havn’t paid it off, still 23.75 years to go….

Teasel, got some Renthal Kevlar’s last week, but cheers.

Exactly this – you have savings when many are in debt. Not implying this is your fault like but I’m struggling to muster sympathy for you…

Which IS the point of the thread.

Savings? Ha! What are they? Surplus savings? Never heard of them.

Would love to be overpaying on the mortgage, but my spare is currently paying the rent on my son’s house! helping them with their new baby costs! I am a proud grandad tho. 😀

Its not, its my soh being used to create a stereotypical STW type “problem” for the amusement of others on a Friday.

Guess it didn’t come across that way but hey, we can’t all be Hora can we.

just got a letter from the bank saying that there was more money in the offset accounts than in the mortgage. They are basically telling me that I need to buy a new bike, but they didn’t say what I should get. Suggestions?

    Suggestions?

Something crazy and expensive, that you don’t even need.
And a Audi to put it on?

    (I understand ‘mortgage’)

Surplus savings?? Life’s tough for some.

Should be bank’s letter say ‘well done, you’ve paid off your mortgage’ then, or is my understanding of offset wrong? (considering getting one when my current fixed deal runs out, so please put me right)

If you can afford to save you can afford a 0% finance over 18 months 😀

You have the means to pay off your mortgage if you choose to.

But you could also spend it all on shoes, tiger food and curtains if you felt like it.

    Hope that helps.

    Missing the tag #firstworldproblems.

I’m spent the new bike fund on a trip to Andorra skiing, flying Sunday morning. Still eyeing up a Croix de Fer though, credit is helping the economy right?

How is paying extra on a mortgage materialistic? Or the fact I saved up is materialistic?

The fact you are whining about not being able to buy a new bike is materialistic, silly!

I hoped I wouldn’t have to spell it out, I really did.

    Hello Kryton57.
Your interweb profile is now complete.
I am afraid it is bad news(almost sad face),so bad in fact that my line manager told me not to email you the profile(mildly shocked face) .
He has instead suggested a virtual therapy session voucher, that you can cash in at Iamadaftpotatoe.corn .
They are a great bunch ,and I feel sure they will help you find a nicer fluffier place on the WWW travels.
Lots of nice virtual hugs and vibes ( caring smiley face)

But it was intended as a comedy wine cynic-al it really was, in lite of the first world problem threads. Seems though that some, perhaps all of the audience took it seriously. I genuinely thought people would see that and post lighthearted ” oh no not the bike fund…” comments.

Now’s probably not the time to mention that I may have just bought a bike to be confirmed tomorrow….. 😀

I’m guessing you’ve got a few bikes, maybe a titanium one too? Here’s an idea, how about being happy with what you’ve got and just ride more.

    And so the flaming starts….

Yeah, 4 bikes, comparable to lots here. And I live in The SE, drive a German car, have nice house, 2 kids, and quite like Kylie pictures.

How am I different to 90 of the STW population? Don’t answer that….

Edit: And have a Nespresso, stove top and caffetierre…

So it’s ok for everyone else to post their 20k bike sheds, 1k wood burners, Audi a6’s, 2k Horsethief builds, 10k bike vans and “what guitar that ill never play” thread then post a thread complaining about a £7 postal delivery being late and that’s ok?

Maybe others in here need to look at themselves. Ok so my humor was off, so what.
