Winterproofing/insulating a rabbit hutch

It’s that time of year – I am absolutely not bringing the bloody things inside so need to winterproof their hutch. During the winter it is placed in a relatively sheltered position up against the house on a patio and we have a small electric heater (an animal safe one – don’t panic) that sits under their bedding but I want to construct something to keep out the wind and rain as well as provide some additional insulation. In the past I have used corrugated plastic sheets (on an old hutch and won’t fit on our new, much bigger one – it is 6ft x 2ft x 2ft – this one). I could try corrugated plastic again but I was wondering if there is anything else that might be better? I am thinking construction materials rather than just a rainproof cover. Thank you!

We used celotex (we had some spare) which I screwed onto the hutch using thin wooden battens to stop the screws going through. Then I tacked a tarp over the top which could be rolled up or let down in real monsoon conditions.

Yes we do that – constantly reminding them and they do come inside for some play time (getting hard now our kids are teenagers, but they still do it when told)!

Ours are now resident in a second run / the kitchen ! Whilst it’s a PITA as far as less space in the kitchen, much easier to manage and keep an eye on, etc through winter – especially with the storm.

When we fostered a rabbit when it was faced with eviction. We made it a large pen in the lounge  and made it a Warren out of large plastic tubes and boxes filled with shredded old fleeces.

It was great watching the rabbit excavate it’s boxes.

Bring it in for winter, rabbits are less trouble than our elderly tortoise which is currently rampaging round our dining room.
