Why no anti-insect mesh in vented helmets?

Is mesh in the vents not a thing any more or is the pleasure of not having insects fly inside your helmet considered a high end premium feature these days?

Last 3 helmets I’ve bought, none had it:

My Rudi Project ‘can’t remember the name but it wasn’t expensive’ MTB helmet has it. a quick glance at the site shows many of them have it. My much more expensive Giro road helmet doesn’t……and road cycling seems to be where I get most insects in my hair

I’ve struggled to find one recently…and where I live there are millions of bugs and insects (brilliant…except when cycling)

I got stung on the top of the head a couple of weeks ago – wearing my road helmet.

MET used to do a cheaper helmet with mesh.

Endura helmets with their MIPS system do include a mesh of sorts – it’s the way the liner is made.

Kask used to do a separate mesh for the Mojito, but I’d definitely prefer slightly less airflow and zero bugs in my helmet design.

My Rudy Project Egos (available reduced at BikeLounge last time I looked) comes with it. I immediately took it out in favour of the open pads as I need max ventilation, and mostly seem to suck insects into my gapping panting mouth if they come anywhere near me!

LOL at weight impact. The type of mesh in the vents of helmets I’ve owned in the past would have had zero impact on weight, and negligible to airflow. It tended to only be in the front facing vents.

Mostly concerned about preventing larger insects like bees and wasps flying in there.

Yep, having suffered a wasp in a helmet and get caught under the netting, i cut it out of any helmet i get.

Endura MT500 – as Jamiemcf says, it doesn’t have mesh so to speak but the construction does a job keeping most flying bugs out.

I think in all the years of cycling I think I’ve probs swallowed or been stung or bitten by more bugs that have ever been trapped in my helmet. Bug meshes are a solution to a non-issue IMO

I have a Giro road style helmet that has mesh…not a posh one…it’s annoying as I can’t stick my sunglasses in the vents. And the only time, thus far, that I’ve been stung cycling was when a wasp decided it wanted a rest in the collar of my top the gave me a ‘pat’ on the back as it left. Cue me falling off my bike as I thought I’d been shot. Everyone else saw the funny side ?

It’s got mesh on the front centre vents – it seems to have stopped things crawling round on my head when riding for the most part. You can still put sunnies in the side vents..

I like it – it’s comfortable, not too hot and seems well thought out.

My previous 7dip helmet had a mesh, my current Kali Maya doesn’t but I’ve just got an Endura MT500 with the Koroyd infills.

I remember my mate doing a spectacular moving/running dismount the once and flinging his helmet off whilst franticly waving his hands around his head to get rid of a wasp that had gone in his helmet – I wish I’d filmed it!

I’m bald, so insects through the vents are no fun at all!

9 times out of 10 I’m wearing a cycling cap underneath my helmet (even while mountain biking – shock horror!) which helps, but nothing’s quite as unpleasant as hanging it out down a descent, road or otherwise, and getting that buzzing feeling on the top of your bonce!

Having been stung on the head by a bee that got stuck in my helmet I would strongly disagree!

A very painful & almost surreal experience.

Last summer the horse fly biting me right on top of the head was extremely unpleasant. My MTB helmets haven’t had the mech for yonks.

But the last 2 helmets bought I bought for commuting both have – previous was a Uvex and the latest is a Giro Revel. Not the most stylish lids, but if pesky insects is a real issue…

Mesh over my gaping gob would be far more useful in Summer!

A long time ago, after having a wasp stuck in my helmet I bought some aluminium reinforcing mesh, the kind of stuff used for car body repairs with P38. Cut out pieces slightly bigger than the vents and pushed it in from inside. Worked really well, until I trashed the helmet.
