  • Why mtb racing is so much cooler than road racing.

Bit of an ego trip but hey, I love this photo of me from the Gorrick Spring Series final round last Sunday (courtesy of 1st Gear Cycles):

Love the fact that in order to get up a rooty climb you sometimes have to essentially ride a unicycle up it.

An alternative title would be: too much power to hold down!

Realise I’m setting myself up here but as a relative newcomer to xc racing, I’m still overly enthusiastic about the whole thing.

You look much less cool then me when I smash a time trial. Sorry, but that’s conclusive proof that road racing is cooler.

mtb xc is dull as dish water as a spectator sport.

Yeah, if your knees are covered then your arms have to be covered as well. Didn’t you read the rules?

First time I’ve ridden in compression socks and have a hunch that they might actually work. Certainly felt springy in the leg department that day.

There should be some sort of petition against long socks in cycling.

In fact you’re socks destroy your own argument.

Let’s just pretend they’re just red bottomed tights then. 😳

Although no handed wheelies are pretty cool, and probably beyond the vast majority of people here!

    It’s not racing – it’s a downhill time trial

Enjoy, and if (when) it starts to feel like a job then stop

Road has Thomas Voekler therefore it is cooler. Simple.

No cycling clothes are cool. No matter what we’re riding, no matter what style we’re employing, we all look ridiculous.

Oh, and road racing is way cooler.
Watching a group of elites turn themselves inside out up a 1 in 4 mountain or sitting on the edge of your seat as a lead out positions Cav for a 50mph+ sprint is awesome.

But it’s way more than just the racing. It’s the culture around road cycling that makes it stand out. It’s the class of the thing.

The rituals, the heritage, the heroes, the complicated tiers of seniority within a peleton, the domestiques, the style and yes, even the doping.

XC is for the most part, very dull.

    Obviously, IMO.

    Hi rollindoughnut,

It was me you chatted to on the practice lap, then on the start – well done, you whipped my arse! Obviously the socks!

I’m baffled about your definition of ‘cooler’. Out of interest, where in the world do you live and in what era?
