Why are single speed riders so opinionated ?

They all seem to have a chip on their shoulder, they think they are better than everybody else because they ride a bike with only one gear

I am new to the forum but have been watching for a while and everytime this Singlespeed thing is mentioned they have to defend it with great vigour, they are no different from anybody else are they

Guess I’m going to get flamed for this post but I would like to know why

I think a bigger question is why mountain bikers are so opinionated? Or maybe that should be all cyclists?

everyone seems to want to question me on why SS when i’m out riding. Generally speaking their comments are derogatory and question my sexuality based on the kind of bike i ride?

For the record, I like’d to ride BMX, now I like to ride MTB in the same way i rode BMX, never really changed gear much, so took them off. That is all.

I don’t think i have a chip on my shoulder, I’m quick to defend my choice to remove gears but don’t really see it as any more relevant a question as why do people use riser bars instead of flat or wether SPDs are better than flats!

I rode one all through my childhood and into my teens !

Maybe its because they get confused changing gear ? or struggle with cable routing ?

is anybody interested that they can ride up a hill quicker than you, their bikes are lighter so they are bound to go up quicker

the ones that ride nothing other than a one geared bike seem to be the worst, they seem to want to preach to everybody how wonderful it is

I ride a singlespeed beacuse for a lot of the time I ride Delamere.

Which is flat.

And also, beacuse I can.

Mainly, beacuse its another style of bike I wanted to buy, so I did.

If the post’s about something you’re interested in or own (singlespeed, carbon bars, riding on ‘armoured’ paths at trail centres, etc), then you’re more likely to engage with it.

I don’t think singlespeeders are as opinionated as ANTI singlespeeders!

maybe I take it to seriously, but one somebody chases you on a trail and then pushes past just to prove they can ride a bike with one gear quicker than you can when you have gears surely this is confrontational?

I’m with Junkyard on this – a lot of people like to appear outraged about their choice of niche and there’s a lot of in jokes.

Having said that there is a certain smugness/satisfaction to be found on a singlespeed riding and completing a route with geared bike riders.

I ride SS MTB and I have a geared Road bike. I like Microsoft products and not a big fan of Linux but quite like Macs / Apple products.

Why do I ride SS, cause I can ride everything on SS as well as I did with gears, it makes me fitter and my bike is lighter and simpler (other than working out best gear ratios).

Oh and do I judge people with gears no, nor with belt drives, big tyred ridge bikes, full sussers, fixies – nope each to their own – we wouldn’t have nothing to talk about, moan about or compare if we were all the same!!

Single speeders being better than everyone else has nothing to do with only having one gear on their bikes.

I think it is just one of the new fashionalbe topics to discuss. Still rumbling underneath is the full susser versus hardtail argument and you can’t (generally) have a single speed full susser.

I ride with people that ride singlespeed and I do get it in general with the type of riding we do. But I don’t understand the investment some people make just to go singlespeed to be different. If you got a bike that can easily be converted – or you need a new bike then great, it makes sense.

Surely it can be agreed that full suspension is more fun/faster for certain types of riding. In the same way as a road bike is better for riding on a road. Singlespeed to me should fit into that category and if you can do it low cost and never clean your bike that’s great if you are lazy!

You don’t have gears on your legs or shoes. When you’re not on a bike you’re walking or running and when you get to a hill or go up stairs you push a bit harder with your legs. Singlespeeding just feels sooooooo natural, hence riding with gears is unnatural and a perversion that should be mocked and eventually banished from this planet.

Maybe too harsh? I read that as the OP having never ridden a singlespeed, so doesn’t know about the importance of maintaining momenteum and cadence – particularly uphill. OP was probably just bimbling along in granny so the SSer had ‘push past’ or else stop.

incedently, i have 1 SS, and 2 geared bikes at the mo.
they are all great.
none are better than the others.
im not going to try and convince you of anything one way or another.
