Who’s on first?

I’m trying to remember a comedy sketch from yonks ago.  It was a horse racing commentary, with horse names like “Andy’s Fallen” and suchlike, played out like the seminal Who’s On First routine.  I’ve found a Derek & Clive sketch full of rude words but it’s not that.  It was more like the sort of wordplay deployed by the likes of Ronnie Barker.

My google-fu has drawn a blank.  Does this ring any bells with anyone?

I’ve heard an american one that’s (eventaully) about married life falling apart – not remotely funny though IMO

Peter Ustinov used to do faux sports commentaries. There a very famous GP of Gibraltar sketch and he did one about motor cycle race that included a entrant riding a 50cc Itchi-Fani (said in probably un-pc alike Japanese accent).

The horse names were all like “and Dead Last is second, Falling behind is falling behind” rather than outright silliness or smut.  Those aren’t the exact names, just that sort of thing.

Ooh, that’s not a bad shout.  I was segueing into Python, maybe The 1948 Show?  It’s old, but it’s “my childhood” old rather than “before I was born” old, I think.  If I were to throw a dart at a calendar I’d guess early 80s maybe, but that’s unreliable information.

Yeah, I have a vague recollection of it being on one of my dad’s LPs of 60’s comedy shows; That Was The Week That Was, or Round the Horn those sorts of things. Google only throws up Clive and Derek though.

There was quite a thing for spoof bands at one point (60’s / 70’s) with double entendre lyrics or funny songs based on real ones as well as weird sound effects or the “wrong” instrument – and I’m sure one of those was a horse racing piss take with names like Hoof Hearted, Saddle Sore and so on.

Can’t remember the band though. Some American thing I think but it inspired a British group called Bob Kerr and his Whoopee Band and I think it’s where radio panel games like One Song to the Tune of Another and Swannee Whistle were derived from.
