Who’s best for electric and gas?

Please save me the time of googling and research…
No landline or WiFi required, just electric and gas.
I just need to sign up, currently with OVO – anyone else I should consider.
🙏🏻
jam-boFull MemberOctopus haven’t been **** for the time I’ve been with them which has been a refreshing change.
rockthreegozyFree MemberOctopus are good, no reason to change here in the past four years. They do a referral scheme where you both get £50, let me know if you want a link should you decide they are right for you.
zippykonaFull MemberWe have EDF at the shop. They answer the phone really quickly and use British call centres.
Do not use Scottish Power.johnnersFree MemberOctopus have been ok for me but not great, I’ve had to contact them twice in the last couple of months with issues. In their favour, they’re easy to contact and only needed chasing up on one of the 2 occasions(!), so there’s that!
mrhoppyFull MemberOctopus have been not awful, lots of things can be dealt with on line and what can’t they’ve sorted quickly. App allows you full visibility over your usage and options for “better” tariffs if you aren’t tied to standard times and useage.
Blazin-saddlesFull MemberI like Octopus as their app seems straight forward and any billing/changes are clear and prices seem about right. See no need to move.
FlaperonFull MemberBeen happy with Octopus. I get all my electricity at 7p/kWh but even without that facility I’d be prepared to stick with them because they are distinctly less evil compared to other companies (the CEO posts pretty regularly on Twitter). Are they in it to make money? Obviously. But compared to British Gas, or SSE, or eon… they’re worlds apart.
convertFull MemberTime for me to do this. There seems to be some discussion that the cap will go up in October so maybe time to get a fixed for 12 months and we are more broke now than any time in the last 25 years so not in a position for any nasty surprises. Currently with OVO. Eon is cheapest. Octopus surprisingly not that competitive.
I get all my electricity at 7p/kWh
You what now? Is this an PV panel thing or something?
boomerlivesFree MemberI was OK with Octopus, but this week they have sent me notification that they will take £1950 off me next week.
This is because I got a charger quote off them twice in the preceding 3 months.
I can make it go away, I just need to send them a copy of the receipt. I asked if they could supply a copy of the orders and they claim ‘that’s not their area’
They can dress it up, but they are just as shite as the others.
trail_ratFree MemberYou what now? Is this an EV panel thing or something?
Naw he has batteries and charges them when charging his car.

It’ll be some combo of smart meter with appropriate tariff, PV and or dedicated battery storage and or electric vehicle battery etc etc. My benchmark is what it would otherwise have cost in petrol to do 14k miles per year and run the house per year. Currently averaging 10.06p/pkWh on Agile Octopus tariff (split approx. 13p/pkWh house / 7.50p/pkWh car).
I think it’s still worth recommending Octopus Tracker tariff for gas and/or electric, although I don’t think it’s anywhere near as generous as it used to be. It’s a daily price which has averaged at 18.11p/pkWh and 4.54p/pkWh over the last 3 months ( Dec 23v1 tracker tariff version for Yorkshire). Standard price cap tariff was around 23.30p/pkWh and 6.50p/pkWh over that period, I think. There’s a website/app called gastracker.uk which gives you the daily Tracker prices and historic price info. for your region. There’s no get out penalty from Octopus if it doesn’t work for you.
hungrymonkeyFree MemberSlight tangent, but, what are people doing to have ‘issues’ with their suppliers?
Gas/elec comes in, bill goes out via DD, defined by a smart meter.
I know it’s a ‘thing’ cos this type of topic is often talked about, but in 10 years, other than changing suppliers twice, I’ve never had need to interact with a supplier!
Fwiw e.on/npower or whoever I pay a bill to seem fine ?
johnnersFree MemberSlight tangent, but, what are people doing to have ‘issues’ with their suppliers?
If you’ve never had any problems with your supplier then I’m happy for you but it doesn’t come down to things people are doing.
I’ve contacted Octopus twice in the last few months. The first time was when I noticed that despite my gas meter usage being reflected in their app they hadn’t actually been billing any of it, just my electricity use. So I asked them to start billing so I didn’t build up an untoward deficit.
The second time was when they reviewed my payments and decided to increase my monthly amount by 20%. This was accompanied by their own calculations clearly showing that my current payments were sufficient to cover my energy use fully. I queried this and was told it was”to put me in a better position to deal with future price fluctuations. Thanks but no thanks, I’ll make the decision to deal with it myself if it’s necessary! If I hadn’t contacted them they’d just have gone ahead with ramping up my payments.
So neither was anything I was doing, one was their error, the other an opportunistic money grab.
BoardinBobFull MemberNot British Gas. Without exception the worst customer service of any company I’ve ever had to deal with. They were the supplier when we moved into our house
Highlights included:
Being unable to access my online account for ages. Kept telling me I wasn’t registered. When I eventually managed to get someone on the phone we discovered they’d setup my account name using the phonetic spelling of my email address?
Being completely unable to make any changes to my account for almost 2 years. They setup my account with a £10 monthly direct debit. For 2 years I was unable to change the direct debit or make an additional payment. They also didn’t bill me for 2 years. Eventually I got hit with a £1900 bill once my account was finally properly setup.
When the account was supposed to be correct and working, any payments I made took months to be deducted from the actual outstanding bill and they kept demanding higher and higher payments despite me having made them all, they weren’t deducting the payments from the balance, they just kept adding additional usage on.
Why didn’t I change provider you might ask? Because British Gas had somehow managed to setup my address wrong for the gas supply, so when I did try to move to Scottish Power, I was only able to move the electricity as the address British Gas had was complete nonsense and bore no relation to my actual address. Then the whole energy crisis hit and no one was taking on any new customers.
