The helmets on sale all have to pass the minimum safety standards

It’s true, but the minimum safety standards are pretty damn minimal. EN1078 hasn’t substantially changed since 1997 and it wasn’t even very demanding then.

Sounds like there perhaps needs to be a campaign to tighten and raise those standards.

I suffered serious head injury a few years ago (non MTB) which means I have massively upped my helmet game. I fell whilst riding a BMX at a skate park (whilst supervising a Cubs trip!) and only had a piss pot helmet from the skate park. Suffered a major concussion and still have memory issues as a result. Would a better helmet have helped? Probably? Maybe?

I now ride most fast stuff in a Fox Proframe, I tried a Dropframe but the difference when on the head was really minimal, with the full face being very easy to live with. I’ve also got a Fox Speedframe open face for less gnarly/fast stuff and a nice MET gravel lid for commute/road/gravel. All have MIPS. I got knocked off on my commute back in May and landed on my head, I feel a decent helmet made a difference. You could se how the MIPS had allowed the helmet to roll around my head (damage on top and sides).

Kayaking lids the same, now have nice Sweet helmets (Rocker Full Face and Open).

If I didn’t have a helmet with protection to the back of the head already, I’d be getting one after seeing the French rider get smacked by her own wheel in the back of the head today

    My helmet line-up:

    1x DH full face

    2x enduro full face

    3x enduro half shell

    2x trail half shell

    2x road/gravel

Only the trail half shell currently has MIPS-style tech (the Leatt version).

Watched this recently because anything with Cathro is good. It shows some helmet testing and how well some of them stand up to crashes.

The fact that some of you believe more spend buys more protection is interesting, aside from not wanting to feel like you’ve been mugged, what is that based on?

Based on the fact that cheap helmets tend to have few vents, are heavier, and have less adjustment latitude, whereas more expensive helmets are much lighter, with bigger vents, a much wider and more sophisticated range of adjustment and don’t look like you’re wearing a pudding bowl strapped to your head.
Having hit my head hard on tarmac once at walking speed when my singlespeed went out from under me, for no obvious reason, leaving me with a life-changing knee injury, (osteoarthritis in two places), and the side of my face badly grazed, the peak on my lid, a Giro if I remember, took the brunt of the impact, which I’m certain would have seen me in hospital with at least a concussion, possibly worse – people have died from a fall hitting their head on a kerbstone.
I’m not prepared to compromise safety or comfort by being a cheapskate. I’m also not going to wear something that’s just plain ugly.
