Is the joke that the Colonel’s head has swollen due to a build up on fluid on the brain, and his little neck tie is, in fact, badly drawn arms and legs?

You know hydrocephalus is a really deeply unpleasant condition which causes brain trauma and is potentially fatal yeah?

Yes I get it. Yes it made me laugh. Yes I think it’s totally ok to make jokes out of serious things.

Yes – small body, big head but to call it a joke is pushing the boundaries of comedy! 😉

I didn’t get, had to google the condition, didn’t find it funny. Since you ask!

I’d have had to google hydrocephalus. If I’d *known* what it was then I’d have found it funny.

I find it not just acceptable but incredibly important that there’s *nothing* considered off the table when making jokes.

Offence is taken, not given. That’s an important distinction.

Yeah I’ve heard it before without the none offensive medical context but I think that’s what’s made it less funny, the fact you used the medical term.

It’s a subtle joke but it wouldn’t go over your head if you had hydrocephalus.

What could I have used – massive swollen head syndrome?

    @HTS – I get that.

It’s not really a visual joke for two reasons.

    1. It’s not visual, it’s a joke about picture. If it was a visual joke, it would just be a funny picture.

    2. It’s not really a joke. It’s a very slightly amusing observation.

I disagree. Saying ‘Look, Mr KFC has a big head with small arms and legs’ would be an observation. The way it was framed with the line ‘Fried chicken implicated in extreme case of hydrocephalus.’ makes it a visual joke IMO (ie, you have to look at the picture to get the joke).

The OP not posting the picture properly sort of ruined the joke, if it is a joke.

It is, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not possible to be offensive.

@Cougar: “‘It is, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not possible to be offensive.”

You can always hedge your bets – being overtly racist will be offensive to most people. But it won’t be to some.

So you can’t, inherently, ‘be offensive’. You can say things that other people take offence at – and to them you’re being offensive. But that’s not actually the case.

E.G. I don’t find bad language, of any kind, offensive. Not in the slightest. My sister, on the other hand, dies a death from a few words. Yet, I find her spending habits offensive.

You can’t legislate for what people take offense from. So no. You can’t “be” offensive. Not really. You can just hedge your bets if you really want to try to offend someone. But you’re just trying to provoke *them* into taking offense.

No, it was a different context altogether. I can’t recall exactly but better than that and hydrocephalus.

    Edit: Found it.

@cougar – just because something is illegal doesn’t make prove a principle (or the rightness of a thing – Alan Turing was chemically castrated for being gay – breaching a law that most (but not all) people would take offence at nowadays).

I take offence at the concept of “hate speech”. It’s an infantile way of looking at the world.
