502 UPDATE: Monday 8th July – Singletrack World Magazine

added 8 hours ago..  I really hope they can’t be added to the thread titles, quickly tested you can’t add them by using the button below but I wonder if the code can be added manually..

    Piston heads still has them.

The use has dropped off a bit over the last few years.

Yeah, I’m not really a fan. That said, it’s obviously a work in progress so no doubt things will change.

I do like emojis (non animated) as I think they can get the tone across better sometimes, particularly as the humour can be very dry on STW.

The new ones are a little small and initially the animation reveal can take a while… So no doubt at some point I’ll be making a comment on a pretty serious thread and I’ll finish it off with:

Which might not be ideal! Lol

The aliasing around the edges makes me feel a bit queasy; the emojis’ white background clashes with the forum’s dark theme. :vomit:

Maybe it’s to appeal to the younger generation? The site needs newer members, perhaps the animatedemojicons will pull them in. They are pushing me out though, I’m a big boy now.

While I’ve been on here for a hell of a long time, I don’t have any influence at all, let alone that sort of influence! I have a web page saved from a long time ago, that I’ve been using very recently because the regular emoji weren’t working.

The fact that they’re designed for a white background has triggered me.

The fact that they’re designed for a white background

Yet another example of unconscious bias in the media, eh?

But seriously, I think “designed” is generous. Someone has probably accidentally ticked or unticked the wrong box in WordPress to make them appear.

I can’t believe they would have actively chosen to implement them.

    Let’s go proper retro…

    ☉ ‿ ⚆

I’ll guess at unicode emojis being broken by the site move, something to do with the charset settings in the database, and as a quick alternate these animated emojis were turned on… being an all day dark mode user they don’t really work for me.

Yet another great example of just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should.

    ?

(… And I see that normal emojis now appear as a question mark – FFS!)

Double edit: didn’t know about the site move. Sigh.

And there was me thinking that would make the site load quicker….

Have these been added because the ability to add unicode emojis got broken in the upgrade? 🙂

(they just show as question marks now)

Regardless of where they come from, why can I never find an ’embarassed’ emoji when I need it (usually when acknowledging a sense of humour failure/over-reaction on my part 🙁 )

It will… you can follow the progress in the sticky thread.

    TL;DR summary:

The new site has been indexed for super-speed but this is not yet fully in place.

Currently there is no page caching, so every page is being loaded direct from the database.

The hamsters are off today for various reasons (except Mark – gerbil?) but this is all going well so far and will be sorted soon.
