What's your first name, do you like it and would you change it?

With mini-clubber 2 due in a few weeks, I’ve been thinking about names quite a lot recently.

so, what’s your first name – your real one as stated on your passport/etc and/or as appropriate the one you actually use? (first names only – we wouldn’t want people giving up their anonymity though clearly some people already do so in their user names – eg we all know that TJ’s first name is ‘Tandem’ 😉 )

And how do you feel about it? Would you change it now if there was no associated hassle/etc? How was it when you were younger compared to now?

I’ll start – my name’s Dylan. I never met anyone else with the same name until I was in my 20s so it was considered an uncommon name when I was growing up. There was the odd time that I did feel it singled me out for teasing when younger but by and large, I liked having a name that no one else I knew did. I still don’t really know anyone with the same name though I’ve noticed that quite a lot of young kids seems to share it nowadays.

The only thing that grated was that I seemed to hear of quite a few dogs who shared my name 😕

I dislike my name although used to it now. I was singled out for a slagging for it often. I would have given a lot for a monosyllabic name when I was a kid

Its just a name but you hear it shouted everywher eyou go so a bit common [ so quite apt]

My only advice give them a name that means they wont be picked on… by luck I seem to have come up with childrens names that cannot be abbreviated but that was not the plan it just happened – som efolk care about this . Dont stat t the name with an H idf you live up north a mate spends ages correcting Helena from ealanor [ yes I cant spell those names]

Yeah, Tandem is a tough name for a kid 🙂

I have to say, Jeremy is one of those names that says ‘posh kid’ to me which I can imagine would make it tough at school unless of course it was a posh one…

Simon. Quite happy with it, although it does have a hint of ‘born in the 70s’ about it.

My mum chose it because she wanted a name that couldn’t be abbreviated, because obviously no-one would ever call me Si 🙄

I was actually Philip for a couple of hours, but they changed their mind.

If I’d come out a girl I would have been Geraldine apparently. Wouldn’t have been so happy about that

Sam, yes, No.

Although when I was a small kid it did seam like most of the local dogs were called Sam as well. Plus I was always asked by any new teacher what my proper name was as Sam couldn’t be my full name.

TJ – bet that was fun then. See, private schools clearly are a good thing for the Jeremys/Tarquins of the world 🙂

so to the OP – simple,normal, conventional, short. these are the best names IMO

Frances, hated it as a kid and insisted on using my middle name, now I don’t mind i as don’t know any other Frances’ (except my Aunt whom I was named after) although as you can imagine I rarely get called Frances, shortened to Fran.

Don’t really like it, so I’ve always just shortened it to Jon. Not sure it would even register as my name if someone shouted it out now.

Contrary to popular belief it’s Simon or Simón, I’ll answer to both though, shitferbrains I draw the line at.
Not bothered about changing it but if I have a boy I’d like to use Sebastian.

Oh…. and quality name Munqe-chick. I love it! Same as my 7 year old. Named after her great grandma. Though she gets called Francois as much as she gets Fran. For some reason

First name William, known by my second name Andrew. Was a right PITA not been known by my first name on school register etc and explaining that its Andrew/Andy.

Even my parents didn’t seem to get on with it and called me Dez most of my life! For some reason I’ve decided I’ll be Derek at work and Dez everywhere else.. (don’t ask me!) (oh and DebZ on the forum)
Weird, cos they named my older brother Ray, not Raymond because it would only get shortened to Ray anyway 😕

I like it but it’s not always been an easy name to live with.

During my teen’s, when I introduced myself to people, one of my mates would always pipe-up with “that’s what his girlfriends call him anyway!!” 😯 🙄

Stephen, though no-one bar my Gran calls me by that name, it’s always Steve or Stevo.

I quite like it in a boring, middle of the road kind of way.

Julian, yes, no.

Bloody horrible name to grow up with as a kid – “julie” was quite common and lead to more than one playground fight. Apparently around age 8 I decided to change my name and wanted to be known as Steven. I have no recollection of this but by mum and my auntie (RIP) both swore it happened. Lasted about three days they reckon

Didn’t know anyone else with the same first name till I was in my twenties, even now there’s only one other guy on facebook with the same full name as me.

Still get people calling me Justin and Adrian. Doesn’t bother me anymore, I realise it’s them just being ignorant and not actually paying attention

Tangwyn. I was born in Wales to hippies in the 70s. My mother is Indian so I also have the name Ramananda. I wanted to be called Scott when I was young. Still my other siblings faired worse. Merlin, Hermes, Dolphin (aka Finn) and bizarrely Peter, Adam and Ryan. Two sisters; Aurelia and Jemima.

I lived in Barry, so used to get Oh, O as a greeting. I don’t think you can be disappointed living in Barry.

Mine’s Neil. Possibly after Neil Diamond. I don’t particularly love it or hate it. It’s my name and that’s that.

I prefer it to the name that I was nearly lumbered with. Glenn. Ooooof.

Michael – like it well enough, it’s very common where I grew up. Like most shortened names, I don’t actually like the sound of Mike particularly. Although it’s not something you can correct people on without sounding like a bit of a bell end – Actually it’s not Mike it’s Michael.
So I usually just introduce myself as Mike and leave it at that.

Lynsey. My mom really liked the name, told me she heard it for the first time because it was the name of Paul McCartney’s ex-girlfriend, Lynsey de Paul. Although apparently she was actually Ringo Starr’s ex-girlfriend…

My mom thought it was a nice and unusual name. Sadly, so did two other sets of parents of girls in my year – I was one of three Lynseys. Apparently my mom wanted it spelt with a ‘d’, but my dad insisted on the final spelling, saying that ‘Lyndsey’ was a boy’s name. I think he was just a bit miffed, because he wanted me to be called Holly. Can’t imagine being a Holly. When I was about 8, I really, really wanted to be called Tiffany! 😆

My names Adrian, used to hate it as a kid, I guess because I got teased and called Adrienne 🙄 but its grown on me since, most of my friends call me Ady or Ado!
