Anyone remember Smhoo  a white bowling pin looking creature, iirc it could shape shift?

Also liked Woody Woodpecker. Couldn’t stand Batfink or Mr Magoo

    Tom and Jerry definitely.

Would have said Danger Mouse, but not sure it’s aged as well when showing the kids when they were younger.

Im sure there was a cartoon like Lost Cities of Gold that had a line in the opening credits that said

“…and we search for our destiny…” something something something

Can’t for the life of me remember

Many of the above plus Marine Boy, mostly for the theme song.

Plenty have been said which I’d consider, but the first one to cross my mind was Muppet Babies. Used to make a point of getting up early on a Saturday morning to watch it and I can’t remember why other than hoping that cookie monster features in it.

Transformers for me. Nothing more exciting than the doodoodoodoodoo music and the flipping autobots/decepticons logo.

Battle of the Planets.(What was the name of the villain??)

Zoltar. In the Japanese original he/she was a hermaphrodite, handwaved as Zoltar’s sister in the sanitised UK outing.

it was only a few years ago that I found out that Battle of the Planets was actually hyperviolent Japanese Manga, and they just cut all the violence out which is why the plotlines never made much sense.

I wouldn’t say it was “hyper violent,” but the original Anime dealt with some dark themes. 7-Zark-7 was added to paper over the cracks (which is why the animation is clearly different and ropey as hell). Like, Jason was quietly dying from a brain aneurism and increasingly losing the plot, then it’d cut to Centre Neptune and Poundland R2D2 would go “but it’s OK kids, he took a couple of paracetamol and everything was fine.”

Fun fact, Mark was voiced by Casey Kasem, the same chap who voiced Shaggy and presented America’s Top 40 on Saturdays.  Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars.

I remember that there was a cartoon series called Ulysses but not what it was about.

You’re both thinking of Ulysses 31.

Ulyesses 31 was from the absolute peak of “this children’s TV show was created by sleep deprived people on drugs”

Does anyone remember one where the main character was a beach buggy? (Pretty certain I’m not getting mixed up with the hair bear bunch)

I also vaguely remember Watoo watoo about a bird, and a cartoon about an egg called Ludwig?

i remember Ludwig and was just thinking about it the other day, i always assumed it was a bizarre Eastern European animation dubbed into English but wiki says it was produced in the UK, it was… odd

luckily my Dad loved a cartoon so The Pink Panther, Tom & Jerry, Road Runner and all the rest were required viewing 🙂 then as I never grew up Roobarb and Custard, Henry’s Cat, Animaniacs, Pinky and The Brain, it goes on…

Loved most cartoons. Ulysses was great. Trap door was amazing. Even gummie bears! We still listen to cartoon theme songs when tidying the house. Pole position is a great one. But now get to watch stuff like Teen Titans with the kids…The light begins to shine.

I grew up watching Tom and Jerry with my Dad so that’s always going to be special for me. As an adult with a young child of my own we both loved The Simpsons, Family Guy, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain (Narf!) and of course Phineas and Ferb. IMO, a cartoon is only any good if it’s written for both audiences; the kids and the adults who inevitably have to sit through it with them.

Some quality Hanna Barbara and Fred Quimby stuff out there.

Tom & Jerry the gold standard.

But definitely Road Runner (feat. Wyle E Coyote) is a fave. Some many ACME special devices I still want to this day.

Danger Mouse was quality, with David Jason + Terry Scott vying for comic supremacy on each line.

Can’t believe (or see) any love for Whacky Races or Stop the Pigeon.   Dastardly and Mutley have GOT to be up their with Greenback as arch villians of the universe.

Pinky and the Brain was excellent too.

Yogi + BooBoo outsmarting Ranger Smith in Jellowstone too (smarter than the average bear ?)

One thing I’m sure we can all agree on though was that Scrappy Doo needed taking to Battersea and putting down.

They could do a remake of Hong Kong Phoey.  This time set in HK, jumping into the filing cabinet to change from mild mannered janitor into democratic liberalist freedom fighter subverting Ping’s attempts to subdue  the masses whilst still keeping the school clean.

The Trap Door is hands down some of the best TV ever in any genre. Not sure it’s a cartoon though…

My ‘growing up’ list would probably be something like…

    Tom And Jerry

Road Runner / Wile E Coyote

    Bugs Bunny

    Scooby Doo (pre-Scrappy Poo)

    Jamie And His Magic Torch

    Arabian Knights

    Roobarb And Custard

    Mr Men

    Mr Benn

    Hong Kong Phooey

If The Trap Door counts though, then Chorlton And The Wheelies and The Magic Roundabout get somewhere near the top of the list too.

As a kid I always found Ludwig pretty perturbing.

And, Ralph Bakshi did Spiderman?!? Had no idea. Need to dig that out…

Ulysses 31 and The Mysterious Cities of Gold.

They were made by the same people surely…

MCoG is one of the few kid’s shows both my wife and I remember and my kids have watched every episode.

Absolutely loved watching all the above growing up ! In fact if I was on mastermind (which I wouldn’t due to me being thicker than a piece of 3×2) it’d be my specialist subject. Another to throw into the mix would be Bravestar. He had the ability to call on certain animals powers to help him. Eyes of the hawk, speed of the puma, strength of the bear etc. As kids we used to take great pleasure to call out : Dick of a donkey ?
