There must be some good brokers out there or good companies that arent part of the big crowd that still offer realistic prices but just dont spend shed loads on advertising and comparison site fees.

For instance a friend manages to insure his BMW through a specialist and gets it for a fraction of the price im quoted and its a much bigger engined car, mines just a diesel Accord Estate.

Your age, gender, driving history (any points on license, etc)where you live and where you keep the car will have quite an influence on the quote

Yes try the yellow pages.

If not try a comparison site. It’s only a rip off if you take the wrong deal you don’t even have to take one of them.

Otherwise ask your mate.

Get signed up to the typeaccord.co.uk forum, that’s how I found out about Chris Knott. There are also links to getting discount genuine parts and service kits from a Honda dealer in Stoke, they’ll post things out.

Comparison sites – how are they ripping you off?

If you want insurance from an not 100% profit driven organisation then go to the co-operative website. I’ve been using their house insurance for years and it’s always been pretty reasonable.

The MIL works for an insurance brokers and essentially they have a list of insurers they use for everything, they don’t scour the country looking for the best deal for you they simply submit your details to the insurers on their list

It’s a pain but personally I change insurers car/bike/house every year. There is always some kind of new customer discount and, bizarrely, your existing insurers will very often give you a better quote than their renewal premium!

Directline.com has proved by far the cheapest for me over the last couple of years, over 400 quid less than some of the quotes I’ve had from comparison sites.

No idea why you wouldn’t use comparison sites* – all insurers will vary depending on your circumstances and what type of customers they’re trying to target at that point in time, so individual recommendations are mostly pointless.

Set aside a couple of hours, follow this guide step by step and you *will* save time and money.

I’d at least try a search on one of the comparison sites – it could well be worth 5 mins of your time (as that really is all it takes).

And then try a couple of independents – Adrian Flux is cheaper for me, but everyone’s different – the other half it’s cheaper to go through the comparison sites than independents. I moved to a less ‘nice’ area and insurance went up. There’s no rhyme or reason sometimes, you just have to play the game and do a bit of leg work if you want to chase for the cheapest prices – there is no simple way of doing it.

There are loads of alternatives.

You can use a comparison site.
You can phone around all the various companies yourself.
You can ring a broker – http://www.biba.org.uk/

All of the above will result in a very similar product and price if done properly.

One thing with the comparison sites is to check with your preferred insurer directly afterwards.

Did this last year and it came out with Churchill being the cheapest ,then did a seperate quote directly on the Churchill website and got it cheaper still.
