Anyone know what this is? About a week ago I got a “dead leg” feeling in my quad after some bike intervals, which slowly got better yes returned Tuesday after some sprint intervals.

Now when I walk the front of my foot kind of slaps the floor, a bit like I have a false lower leg and its being loosely thrown forward during the walking process.

    ??

Hmm. That doesn’t sound great does it. Might I suggest a docco?

Any hint of numbness? I’d guess a back injury impinging on a nerve, but it’s a very wild guess.

Last Oct I noticed a numb patch on my lower shin, which doesn’t affect my mobility (I run with no problems, the ankle works fine). Googling told me it was MS, but it didn’t really fit the description that well and seems to be wearing off very gradually over time (still present though to a lesser extent). I think I could have done it through falling off my MTB, landing heavily on my hip on that side though it didn’t seem a significant injury at the time.

Not really and all my movement / stretches are fine & don’t hurt. But you know after a few minutes after pins and needles your leg feels very slightly weak / unstable for a minute o so before it fully recovers? It feels like that.

I would add is doesn’t cause a limp or anything, I just notice the slight numbness / flappy foot walking to the shops earlier.

That foot drop needs investigating, the sooner the better.

I’d be contacting my GP and wanting an appt in the next couple of days. If you get another symptoms or things deteriorate then **** it A and E.

Cauda Equina? Come on now you making me nervous! Surely just a sporting injury…

Go & see a GP now as in immediately. Could be almost anything all of which need investigation (Says wife who is a surgeon)

Wait though, a thumb like sports massage type investigation reveals some soreness on the central left quad just above the knee not replicated on the other side. It’s just an overuse injury no doubt from 2.5 months of training culminating in short hard intervals. I can feel pain in my calf and foot no problem.

I get a similar sort of symptom when I go for a walk – I don’t stretch and my legs are far too tight, the front of my shins get incredibly painful and the foot kind of sleeps down.
If I do some stretching and mobility stuff the pain takes longer to arrive…could it be similar for you – are you stretching and doing mobility stuff?

Seriously, get it checked. The list of things it “could” be is not pleasant, so get them ruled out.

There’s a fair few neuro symptoms you’re describing there- P+N, heavy leg, what sounds like foot drop (foot slapping on floor as you walk). There is a range of things that can cause them, but some of them are serious, and definitely need to be ruled out. It’s prob not cauda equina (it’s rare) but that is prob the most damaging if not caught early, hence the symptom card. Other things it could be range from the very benign (like parasthatica meralgia, which is a temporary numbness caused by tight clothing) to the very not benign (like a space occupying lesion in the spine)

So, let’s hope for the best but prepare for the worst, and get it checked out, preferably in the next couple of days, sooner if the symptoms progress or new ones develop

Get it checked, mate got floppy feet and it was precursor to diabetes. It was both feet though.

OK thanks for the advice, I’ll get it checked.

Since it’s obviously provoked by exercise and gets better by itself in a few days I think it’s a bit early to be fitting him up for a coffin.

Please get it checked, from someone who has experience. I had an unknown-to-me spinal cord issue that only began presenting issues in my mid thirties. The first signs were a very small loss of strength in my big toe and slight foot drop.

@DickBarton I have the same symptoms as you!
What stretches do you find are helpful?
