Morning All

We have an aged Dyson DC11 which is seemingly struggling to cope nowadays. We’ve tried cleaning the filter without a lot of noticeable gain and the brush in the head has all but given up the ghost so for most of the time we have to use the small head attachment.

I have stripped and cleaned the brushes in the head according to the instructions given on the Dyson site and it spins freely however when you put the power on it does nothing.

I even rodded (sp) the hose with a dish cloth on a garden cane lol

It is quite an old model now so is it worth getting Dyson to come out and have a look at it under their service warranty type thing or would we be better off putting the money toward a newer machine?

If it’s under warranty then get it fixed, if it’s out of warranty buy a sebo.

Dyson sell reconditioned ones on Ebay for a big reduction. We ordered one after our 15 year old Dyson started to struggle.

Have you replaced the big rubber band thing that powers the main brush? Mines gone several times but the replacements are only about a fiver for the pair and easy to fit.

No point spending a lot all it’ll do is gather dust.

There are two belts that run through a clutch system, it’s pretty simple to change the clutch for a new one, (about £14) from eBay, but the smaller drive belt of the two (the hidden one) is changeable, there are video guides on you tube on how to do it.

Strip it out and see whether it’s the small belt or the clutch that’s gone first. Took me about twenty minutes to change ours after my wife sucked up a load of charging cables and jammed it all up.

No point spending a lot all it’ll do is gather dust.

I’ve always been pleased with Dyson products but its around £80 for the service IIRC.

If we looked at a replacement it would be nice to have something that’s a bit more compact and is better with bunny hair.

FWIW I much prefer a pull along to an upright.

When the brush stopped on ours it was a broken wire in the knuckle/hinge/swivel bit thingy on the head, took 10 minutes to find my torx set and 5 minutes to fix,

Just picked up a Miele C3 Cat & Dog and it is unbelievably better than our old Dyson Animal. The power of the thing lifts carpet and one run over the lounge floor picked up every single animal hair. It also runs really quietly and (this sounds weird but) has quite a nice sound to it. Sort of accelerates when you crank the motor up!

And I should add wood burning stoves as well, they make short work of ash/coal dust.

Funny, I was discussing this with my ex the other week, who is professional domestic cleaner doing mainly proper high end houses in rural Buckinghamshire. (she was a lab scientist, but this fits in much better with her lifestyle, pays better, and she loves it – waste of a good education and all that)

She gets to use allsorts of fancy things, from Dyson to Sebo, Miele and G-Tech, the whole lot.

She says that none of them are a patch on Henry (or more precisely a Numatic 200A, the trade version, with a wider wheelbase so falls over less often) which is still the best thing since sliced bread, what she bought for herself at home with her own money and what her business partner bought to use at home too.

A henry is nowhere near as good as a sebo or pretty much any cylinder cleaner with a motorised brush.

just ordered a Dyson V6 handheld on back of previous suggestions on another thread 🙂 Hope it sucks as good as you say Gary … 🙂

We bought the dyson for the caravan Iain and it’s brilliant for that and I’m sure it would be great for a quick vacuum round the house. We have a sebo at home, we always had dysons before but the sebo is far better, they don’t do a cordless hand held though.

So don’t worry, suckage aplenty 🙂

I bought a Numatic Bertie machine from B&Q recently for my house renovation. It has a much less powerful motor than the current house’s Henry (new EU rule?) but actually sucks much better.

Henry’s arent great, top heavy and falls over a lot. On the plus side her indoors picked it and had planned to dump the Dyson, £20 for a new motor of eBay and it’s still going strong in the garage!

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions, after my MOT today going down the new route isn’t an option so I’ll look into keeping it ticking over for now.

I’ve had a quick look on ebay for Dyson DC11 Clutch which only comes up with one RESULT. Will need to investigate a bit further for the belts but thats a job for another day now.

Don’t think the dc11 has a clutch. Its a device to decouple the suction motor from the brushbar so not needed in a pull-along.

Meile – its just so good compared to anything else I have used.

don’t get a henry FFS – he will spend all your money on drugs

The pickup brush on my dc07 stopped turning completely, rubber band was still ok but clutch assembly was the cause, so ordered a replacement for the grand sum of £15 and changed it myself, machine now good as new. Plenty of YouTube vids online.

As said above ^^ ; two kids + dog + variety of hard and carpeted flooring, combined with unabashed (and happy to admit it) neat-freak of a darling wife.

Not to mention the 2 house renovations the Sebo’s seen us through. When it finally dies we’ll buy another. We bought ours locally from an independent vacuums sales and repair place. The owner has a Sebo, they use them in the workshop too. The bulk of his business comes from Dyson repair work – make of that what you will.

Dysons are popular.
