  • Two and half weeks in May, France/Italy with campervan. Ideas for best areas xc riding ?

Driven round Europe a fair bit in the past but first time taking bikes and campervan, looking for any sugestions for areas for unguided rides that could include forest singletrack, big sky rides etc but not rock fests.
My wife struggles a bit with edges and loooong drops but she doesn’t have any issues with most trail centre blacks and big Scotland routes.
Looking for a lovechild of the Yorkshire moors and Scotland but with a sunnier disposition, any ideas appreciated. Not looking for just one area as when go to Europe generally have a bit of wanderlust..

Thanks for that Stoner, looks spot on for what we are looking for. We will be looking to ride most days, no children and both fairly race fit so mileage and time not too much of an issue. As you state in your blog is doesn’t seem to be the easiest place to just plot a route, far to used to just linking bridleways together or long distance routes in Scotland. Any other ideas anybody ?

Have a look at the Morvan http://www.parcdumorvan.org/fr/Tourisme/Sports_de_nature/Le_velo_en_Morvan/Le_velo_en_Morvan.php?rub=06&srub=04&ssrub=01&sssrub=01&lg=fr
We spent 10 days there last year, and though the weather was a bit dodgy, there are lots and lots of routes to explore. There’s mapping and gps here http://www.morvanvtt.fr

Lots of aires in the area, and we also stayed on a couple of few car parks too.

Happy to provide more info, pics and a bit of video if you’re interested.

Thanks sportsnapper, we are putting dots on a map to work out a route and that looks to fit in well. I’ve never been good at stopping in one place for long but am getting encouraged to learn.. It’s our 10yr wedding anniversary and our honeymoon was spent driving through France and Italy for three weeks in a open topped car, so this is a sort of revisit but with bikes and van Instead. Still have the car but the bikes plan is winning at the mo.

We’ve been to France for two/three weeks in the summer for the last few years. It’s so camper/motorhome friendly compared to the UK, and so much countryside to ride. We hardly saw anyone else on Bikes during the week last year – and it was August! We did’t stay in one place, but moved on to a different village and a different trail most days. We were on a mountain tandem – and amazingly been married 29 years!
