    Morning !

Anyone any experience of trek warranty….especially interested if you were NOT the original owner then went on to make a claim.
Was the warranty honoured or were you told to do one….. ?

Considering a second hand trek bike from here but I know the frame waranty applies to original owner and not transferable.

    Trek dealers….. your view ?

    Any experiences out there…. ?
    Thanks

nothing first hand but getting someone official to publicly say yes will be tough

Not a chance sadly, they want a copy of your receipt with any warranty claim.

You’d have though by now all warranties could transfer to new owner. As long as proof of purchase this shouldn’t be an issue, sold my Nicolai on here and no problem with warranty transfer, the comment I had back from Nicolai was its the frame that’s warranties not the owner

What about if the till receipt was available to the new owner…. ?
    Would that be enough ?

will depend if they do registration I guess. Most big brands have an online thing so the frame is linked to the purchaser.

It’s not just bikes. Pretty much everything sold with a warranty is only warranties for the original owner. That is one of the risks of buying 2nd hand stuff.

I would guess that most people don’t consider residual value as a major selling point when buying new.
Therefore most manufacturers won’t bother pricing in transferable warranties, why would they?

Nope – unless you want to pretend you are him/her.

Most mfrs only want to sell new bikes, so if they have a warranty that works only for the retail buyer, that’s enough to sell it.

With Trek and others you’ll need to have the original receipt.

Trek are among the most stringent with this too. Very ‘by the book’.

When I had the first frame break, I had to go through the dealer I bought the bike from and it then took a couple of weeks to verify- I had registered it with Trek when I bought it. The second and third frames were much more straightforward. Colin at Trek was very helpful. You play straight with them and it is no problem. My only gripe about the whole process was the fact they don’t pay for the strip and rebuild, but the silver lining for me is that I learned how to do some mechanicing that has been very useful ever since.

I’ve had two warranty frame replacements (different bikes) from Trek but I was the original owner for both.

Both times I took the bike back to a different Trek dealer than where I brought it from as we’d moved house and both times the dealer needed to take a copy of the original purchase receipt. I don’t know if they have some system to check this against, I know the dealer recorded the frame numbers of the warranty replacement to register them so even if I didn’t register the warranty Trek would have a record of who the owner was.

One of the reasons I’d buy another new Trek is the warranty, I see it as one of the things you’re paying for when you pay the premium for a new frame rather than second hand and I think it’s completly fair on Trek’s part that they only cover the original owner.

The one way to get round it is to get the original owner to deal with a claim then no problem.Lot to ask maybe!!!!!

I’d be up front about the frame being 2nd hand and they might be able to offer you a new frame at a reduced price.
When my remedy frame cracked I couldn’t find my receipt and they were good enough to accept a copy of my bank statement as proof of purchase. Also be aware that STW user trekcol is the head of warranty or something.
