Sweet Child O’ Mine? Everybody knows the words to that, and I’d put money on 99.9% of vaguely professional rock guitarists being able to knock a reasonable version out as they’ve almost certainly played it 1000 times on their way up. In fact, I was specifically thinking that if you had to choose a rock song to play off the hat, this would be one of the best to go for.

You might think that but I’ve done enough open stage to know musicians hate being put on the spot with something non rehersed even if they know it. Even when you’ve played a song with a band before they hate it if you suddenly try to introduce it into the set and they haven’t played it for a while. I’ve got a repetoire of about a 100 songs I can use if I play them through a couple of times. If I don’t play through there’s very little chance I won’t make fluffs, forget how many bars or struggle with remembering all the words and I’ll stand there like a dead man as all my concentration is going into the music rather than performing. Songs are a lot more complicated than they seem; it’s things like playing at the right speeed, the right number of bars between verse and chorus or counting the blanks if there’s a stop so everyone comes back in together – it requires rehersal even if everyone knows the song

Very impressive by the kid. Sweet Child O mine is a 3 chord song that almost everyone knows – I’m pretty sure most musicians could work it out even in the unlikely event they never played it before.

I agree its a set up but I don’t think it matters.  I enjoyed it – gives a good feeling.

It’s not, really.  A good friend of mine is in a rock covers band (and a couple of other bands), they can and do routinely noodle off into random songs that they haven’t rehearsed.  Hell, I know every word to Sweet Child and I have the musical acumen of a turkey salad.

Staged or not – and I think not – that was a lovely watch, thanks for posting.

I do it a lot, first time through I find the main chords, second time through I’ve got most of the chords unless they’re unusual varioations. Third time I’ll have worked out what key(s) it’s in and be capable of adding a few pentatonic licks. Then I get more familiar with the chord sequence and can start adding more bluesy notes. if I want to learn the solo it’ll take days, weeks, months or never depending on the complexity.

Someone on here put up a backing track for us to play over on the guitar thread, half a dozen quite competant guitarists weren’t sure what key it was in or what some of the chords were.

Given the lad is playing his own guitar of course it’s a setup. But anyone who cares about that is a proper fun sponge!

It really wasn’t. The intro is played on the neck pickup with the tone turned right down. Not on an SG with only a bridge pickup. Not quite the expert you make yourself out to be
