As a teacher for 22yrs, who recently left – my advice would be give it a go for a few years, but set yourself a limit to the number of ‘home’ hours you are willing to do. If you can make it balance, then it’s such a rewarding vocation. If not it will suck you dry. I had 15 years of OfSted, Special Measures, Academy, school merger, new build etc, but had a stint on senior leadership and a successful few years as Head of Sixth Form. Became a bit ‘Ground Hog Day’ though and I wasn’t able/willing to keep ploughing the hours in with three young uns of my own. With your life experience etc, you’re at an advantage anyway. Concentrate on getting the kids motivated to learn, show them you care and you can choose not to do a lot of the dreary stuff – no-one has time to check up on you anyway and if what you do in the classroom works, then they’ll leave you alone. Just don’t get so good that they’ll start expecting you to train other teachers.
