  • Tarnished Spokes – What to use ?

    Hey all,
My daughter’s Merida Dakar is less than 1 year old, and for some reason over the winter (in the shed) the spokes have all tarnished.
Now I know she didn’t ride it in the salt, and I’ve so far tried Muc Off and de-greaser to try and clean them up, but it seems to be a proper infection of the metal.

    2 questions,
    1) What (if anything) can I use to polish up the tarnished spokes ?
    2) Is this likely to cause any weakness in the wheel ? Or is it all cosmetic

    Cheers !
    Cale.

Probably not stainless steel spokes. Cosmetic and can be polished with one of those green plastic pan cleaners.

Wire wool & a bit of car polish to keep them shiny.

those pan scourers are very abrasive it would clean them up for now, but long term might make them much worse! can you post a close up pic?

Will try and post up tonight.
Didn’t want to try wire wool without seeking advice first !
Cheers for the info so far !

Peek polish – seems to be as near as you can get now to Belgom Alu. Effective and non-abrasive. At my local shoe repair shop.

Brasso-Duraglit was what I always used years ago on spokes before I had stainless ones.
Polishes up bare aluminium a treat too 😀
