Had a trip to CyB over the weekend which was fantastic right till the last descent (flightpath on the Tarw Du) on Sunday when I came off and ruined the front wheel. The wheel was a 5 ride old Hope Hoop Crest Rim. Wasn’t going overly quick but not slow either.
However I can’t work out what happened, well how the amount damage was caused. I’m pretty sure the front wheel washed out, as there was the right type of sideways skid. So I assume my weight (about 80k) going through the wheel at an angel has caused the damage, is this feasible
I certainly wasn’t airborne so no dodgy landing and there was nothing for me to have hit to cause the damage.
Or could the wheel giving way, from a dodgy build maybe, have caused the crash (clutching at straws).
I’m just trying to get my head round what happened, I’d never had a high speed crash till six weeks ago, now I’ve had 4, one on my old hardtail and the others on my new full sus!
And sorry for the long winded post.
is this feasible
Yes taco'd one of mine in exactly the same way. OTB with the wheel sideways they're not very strong laterally
And me with a Crest 29.
going through the wheel at an angel has caused the damage, is this feasible
as an atheist I don't think its feasible that the angel caused the damage
I landed a jump and ended up OTB at QECP enduro
wheel was tacod, after much jumping I got it straight enough to work in the forks but on a steep descent a few 100 metres later it folded I think my weight over the front and yanking the brake on didnt help
its steeper than it looks....

as to how I tacod it the at the 1st crash Im not 100% certain whether the taco caused me to crash or the other way round if that makes sense
as an atheist I don't think its feasible that the angel caused the damage
Well obviously me or the wheel weren't blessed!
Kimbers - that's a great pic, though it looks like things are about to get a little uncomfortable!
Thanks for the responses; I'll just have to put it down to one of those things.
Wheels are strong in the direction they normally carry weight. Get some sideways force, enough to move the rim far enough out-of-line, and the spoke tension tries to fold them.
I would have a massive framed copy of that pic above my mantlepiece if it was me.
Another bent Crest on Hope here - straight pull or regular?
wheels are incredibly strong when loaded vertically - a former Cytech trainer I worked with said you could load the weight of a family car onto a wheel in a vertical plane and it would not fail
however, laterally wheels are very vulnerable, even when using 3 cross lacing and built properly.
This is even worse for wheels using "radial" lacing which you tend to see on the front wheel of many new road bikes

Regular.
My Arch EX's are going on the full sus, the crests (I've already ordered a replacement) will go on the hardtail, which was the original plan, just hadn't got round to it. Wish I had now!
heres the seqence of that wheel buckling, sort of
sadly they never got a shot of me a few seconds later flying thru the air about to land on my head
(cost me a front wheel, cracked my helmet, and broke my shades but i got a tshirt for crashing and a track pump in the raffle so not all bad)
(I have bought the pic northwind not got round to printing it yet tho!)

Fathomer, as a man of 90kg I can honestly say you look all of your 80kg in that last photo. 😛
thats not fathomer its me
maybe considering my 80kg 😉 I was pushing it riding 717s for enduro .
to be fair theyve lasted a several of years of cased landings and ploughing skillessly into rockgardens
Kimbers, what rims?
mavic xc717 on pro2s
Id been worried about the rear loosing tension so hap spent the night before tweeking that one, I shouldve done the front too!
I folded a front by having the front wash out then grip again. Wheels aren't very strong when you apply a force from the wrong angle.
sounds like what happened in OP. Pull a skid on something grippy (tarmac) get sideways and then let go of the back brake, that'll give you a similar potentially wheel bending experience. Can also be done on gravel if you have an occupied baby seat on the back 😕I folded a front by having the front wash out then grip again.
