Sunrace cassette

Anyone have a long term review of one of these, I’m currently 2×10 but want to change to 1×10 with a larger 42 tooth on the back, my options are a xt cassette with an expander ring or a sunrace cassette, I have an xt set up now and I like the cassette, wanted to know about compareing shifting, noise and wear rates?

Mine has at least 500 miles on it (can’t remember exactly when I fitted it) and only cosmetic wear so far ie anodising wearing off.

Shifting is good. Perhaps not quite up there with ‘raw’ xt but close, better than an expander ring. You’ll want a rad cage though, that makes a difference. I wouldn’t have an expander now

Converted the youngest lad with Sunrace 11-40 before doing Sam Houghton in Lakes last weekend. First impression is very good quality for the price, set-up easily and so far works perfectly (running XT mech).

If you have any problems I’d image they would be related to how well the 42t sprocket and rear mech work together (see rad cage comment above).

I’ve been running one of these since March, 1×10 11-42 with Shimano XT.

So far, excellent. As above, mine has been paired with a long cage XT mech and drivetrain, Hope narrow wide chainring and KMC chain. The shift quality has been very good, with only the slightest slur between gear changes compared with the 11 speed M8000 ST setup on my other bike. The Sunrace cassette is comparatively light too. It’s definitely not a compromised, budget option.

11-42 with a radr cage on a saint mech, very happy with it wear is normal shifting is smooth, the slightly bigger jumps between gears are spot on for my riding.

hated the expander options.

Been using an 11/42 MS3 cassette on my hard tail for 3months with a medium SLX much and KMC chain. All working and shifting OK but not as good as the shifting on my other bike with xt/one up expander and rad cage, I think the Rad cage makes the difference not the cassette.

My sunrace 11-42 has been great, a bit fiddly to set up, but seems to have worn in after a ride or 2, only had it on a few months but it’s been no different to any other cassette so far, I already had a rad cage fitted.

Ridden mine since January and it’s been fine, shifting not as slick as shimano & a bit noisier but problem free do far. Run with XT 11sp rear mech (slx B screw wasn’t long enough for 42T) & Inc chain

Got an interesting issue with mine. Using a medium length xt mech, it runs on the 42 cog absolutely fine but the mech cage rubs the side of the 42cog when in 2nd. It’s fine in 3rd.

Bought an 11/42, fitted it, I had to tweak a long cage XT mech and that was it. It rides up (almost) everything now apart from the sides of houses and flights of stairs…

MX3 since Jan, no issues at all anodising wearing off now but still plenty of life in it. not as slick as shimano but perfectly fine. No RAD cage here but think it would be better with one but CBA ‘cos it works well enough. Well worth a punt.

Replacing an XT 36T with a sunrace 40T, do need to add any more links to the chain?

Had a MS3 on since November about 1k miles on it, all good.

MS3 vs MX3 for durability – is there much difference? I do like the look of the black anodising on the MX3….but I dont want to spend the extra and find out its made of cheese.

Jam bo add some b tension, and maybe back the clutch off a bit. That fixed the same issue for me

Just fitted a MS3 and a MX3 to my bikes. First impressions are that the MX3 shifts more smoothly and is quieter. The weight difference is more noticeable than I thought it would be too. MX3 going forward I think.

First use of mine last night is terrible Mendip conditions. TBH it seems just as competent as the shimano on it before. If ecu what others have said about the rad cage. It solved all my little niggles that a longer B tension screws couldn’t quite deal with. I’m now using an XT m8000 mech since I donated the rad cage equipped mech to my other bike, and shifting wise there’s no difference.

I’m about to fit the 11 speed Sun Race cassette, as somebody who wrecks shimano XT cassette before the chain. Largely down to pushing too high a gear and being heavy. It’ll be interesting to see how long it lasts, my current XT Cassette did around 70 miles before needing the burrs filing down on the teeth and regular dressing, at £46ish from Germany and lighter it’s certainly worth a punt.

I’ve snapped two mech hangers since installing mine. Chain seems long enough with an slx medium cage mech..

My experience matches many of the satisfied users above.

Setup is XT medium cage mech, Superstar narrow-wide chainring and KMC chain. I’m happy with the shifting and also the gear range. As mentioned, the anodising does start to wear off after a few rides.

However, on the 6th or 7th ride I managed (and I don’t know how) to severely bend the 42t gear. I’m assuming it was a rock strike as we were caning it down some of the Peak Districts best descents. I have never actually broken a cassette before.

The good news is I bought my cassette from Charlie the Bikemonger and I emailed him about it, asking if he thought there could be a warranty claim. The imported said yes and Charlie sent out a new cassette. All I need to do is swap them over and send the old one back to Ison.

Great customer support from both Charlie (who made sure I had the new one in time for this weekends ride) and Ison for being quick to resolve this for me in a satisfactory manner. Assuming this is a one off I’d happily buy another when this one wears out.

Thanks for all the replies, am going to go for ones of these over an t rec etc. Not to work out what size front ring to get, my soul is 1×10 with a 36 on the front as its very flat here and a lot of fire roads between trails so need some top end speed. Other bike i use for UK trail centres, is a 36/42 ok for climbs?

Update: MX3 cassette with xt medium mech, xt shifter and chain, Raceface NW 34t chainring woks seamlessly on an old Cotic Soul. Smooth, quiet and accurate.
MS3 cassette with old SLX medium mech, old SLX shifter, Sram chain, OneUp NW 32t chainring works but is clunky, has a tendency to skip gears and has horrific chainline in the 42t ring on an Orange Five. Could be a more shonky setup combined with “old stuff doesn’t work as well as new stuff” shocker but there is a huge difference in performance.
Very impressed with MX3, Raceface and xt combo – would recommend.

I’ve ordered an MS3 without realising there is an MX3. There is a fair difference in price between the two, but I can’t find too much info on the physical differences.

Aside from the 2 aluminium sprockets the does anyone know if the rest of the materials are the same? Thinking about the quality of the steel used.
