The problem with England is there is nothing “special” in it. There isn’t a van de wuisthaasen, an conrad smith, a Richie Macaw, or dare I say it, a Martin Johnson.
Its just an average team playing average rugby. Granted its international level, but if this is an example of the finest English Rugby we’ve got to worry. A team of average players not rising to the occasion won’t win us a world cup.
I can’t help thinking that Lancaster is copying Woodwards model – pick 30-40 players so form players can be rotated who can play together for 4 years, sure they’ll lose some at first but familiarity and a plan will make them “great”. I don’t think the centres start in the same league as Greenwood and Tindall where then, or the forwards (front 3 not included) anywhere near the 2003 team at any point in thier reign.
Too average and a forlorn strategy IMO.
