Success with a mobile phone screen protector!

I have just replaced the cracked screen protector on my phone. No bubbles, no dust. For the first time ever!

I’m feeling quite pleased.

Been doing it for years, always a bit of a problem with the thin plastic ones, but the glass ones are pretty easy if you take your time, and especially if you get ones with the application kit that includes a plastic frame to align the protector. My current iPhone is on its second protector, after I managed to knock it against something, and cracked it, but I’ll be upgrading it next month so I’ll be getting a couple of new ones along with a case. The new iPhones are likely to have a very thin black bezel, so I’m not sure if that’s going to make it easier or not.

Conversely, I’ve got a new Motorola phone, fitted a screen protector – and now the fingerprint reader doesn’t work. Tried to register a fingerprint again and it grudgingly accepts a few presses but eventually fails reporting ‘something went wrong’. Can anyone recommend a screen protector that will work, or something else I can do?

In rare moments of organisation and sanity i buy at a market and let them fit it.

I let the shop mine. If it goes wrong, and it often does, they fit a new one and do not charge. This is an economy. They also have a lot more practice! I presume the service is priced into the product.

it’s piss easy. I use jetech ones from Amazon for the whole family’s iPhones, replaced whenever they get cracked. No one YET (Inc two teenagers and me who rides MTB with phone in pocket) has had a cracked phone screen.

Another vote for JETECH.  The first time I’ve used them a few weeks ago and it worked perfectly. I’ve never had that before, always the odd bubble.

Hard surface wiped and dried, clean the phone, clean your hands, clean the screen again, use the hinge stickers to position, whip the backing off and let it drop and spread itself.

There is deep satisfaction when you apply it pressing in the centre and watch it spread itself unfettered to the edges.

Can anyone recommend a screen protector that will work, or something else I can do?

Not specifically but I’ve got a Google Pixel 6a and I was reading some documentation which suggests that Google have some sort of “certification” or standards for maintaining the finger print reading functionality when a screen protector is used (it’s definitely shonky with my “cheap as possible screen protector from Amazon”…)

So, maybe search for protectors which are “certified” for finger print readers?

(I’ll do that if/when I break the existing screen protector but I’m not that arsed about using finger print reader anyhow)

This is a ‘boy’ job in our household, (I know there shouldn’t be boy and girl jobs, and TBF there are no girl ones!) and I’m actually pretty good at it. Back in the day I’m going to say there was probably a 50% first time hit rate. I rarely mess it up now, even the soft types.

The pre-installed one on my ~2.5 year old Poco F3 saved my moment of stupidity a few months back, when I dropped it onto the turbo bike’s crankset teeth after a ride.

It was only two small dents on the protector, but they annoyed the hell out of me, after a few weeks I finally ordered a replacement protector off Amazon and all was good again.

Tbf the 6a’s fingerprint reader is sketchy at the best of times!

Mrs Vlad is as clumsy AF and she drops her phone at least once per month and has had to replace the screen protector on her phone multiple times; without that screen protector (and case), she’s be replacing screens or phones about every quarter…

Yup, dropped my phone and cracked the screen protector. Idiot.

Funny you should say that. I’ve got a huge crack too. I did it on the day I fitted my protector.

@sl2000 I had the same issue with my Samsung and ended up getting a replacement pack from the screen protector seller as it was supposed to work with fingerprints. It was improved the 2nd time but still not great, switched to facial recognition until I changed phones and with my new Samsung it works fine. There is a setting in the phone that increases screen sensitivity for fingerprint when using a screen protector, does Motorola have that? Maybe have a hunt in settings.

@johnjn2000 No – I’ve searched for ‘protector’ and ‘fingerprint’ but not found anything.

Have now replaced glass screen protector with a TPU one and that works fine. Hope it will stop screen cracking when I drop the phone. I didn’t manage to fit it perfectly – have one bit of dust that I missed.

iPad ones for the maximum win. Absolutely love fitting those (when it goes well, natch).

The ones I buy come in packs of two. They know I’ll stuff one up.

Last time I did it I pulled the wrong bit off, so after perfect allignment, no bubbles…. I pulled the whole damn thing off. Ahhh FFS.
