    Funny, did the same to me. Sticks in you like a knife. Interestingly, the last lines are supposed to represent humanity and hope. It didn’t feel like anything other than piteous desperation to me.

    To me it represented the indefatigability of life and the ability to adjust to circumstances. In a way the story is very similar to Midnight Express in that the characters continue to adapt to the ever-decreasing circle that is their situation (although with more hope than (Michael?) in the latter).
