I need an 11 speed cassette on a spare wheel only to be used on my turbo trainer.
I have an 11 speed disc brake bike so 135mm rear hub spacing.

I thought I needed to buy an 11 speed wheel, but am I right in thinking some 10 speed wheels/freehubs take 11 speed cassettes?
Ideally I'd like to use 11-28 105 cassette.

Road bike or MTB?

MTB:

Shimano & SRAM 9/10 freehubs should be able to take 11 speed Shimano style cassettes.

SRAM 11 speed XD freehubs will only take SRAM 11 speed cassettes and vice versa. Except for the cheap SRAM NX which uses a Shimano freehub.

Road: don't know.

11 speed road freehubs are wider, so 10 speed road wheels will not take 11 speed cassettes; the reverse works, provided that you use a spacer with the 10 speed cassette.

Yep, 11 speed road disc wheel needed. Shouldn't be a huge problem, they've settled on 135mm spacing. Something like a Shimano RX31 will do it. Probably cheaper options out there.

I've got a Salsa Fargo.
So are 11 speed Road and MB cassettes the same width (not talking about 10-42)?
Can I run 11 speed 105 cassette on a MB 10 speed hub?
Just trying to keep cost down.

No. 10 speed road and 8/9/10/11 MTB are (more or less) the same. 11 speed road are wider.

Thanks all.
So if I've got this correct:
Road 11sp cassette only fits road 11sp wheels.
MB 11 speed cassette (other than 10-42) fits road 11sp wheels or MB 9/10/11 sp wheels.

Swapping wheels is not worth the hassle, considering you'll probably have to adjust the mech for the different wheel.

Just stick it in the turbo with whatever wheel you've got fitted atm.

Correct

Tubeless cx currently. Hence less hassle to swap wheels.
