2nd attempt, first thread disappeared into the ether..

As above, changing for slightly more powerful brakes to the new XT four pots and hoping to use the old 180mm rotors.

    Will she die? (wifes bike)

    Thanks in advance.

I haven”t died using Centreline rotors with Shimano brakes.

But my wife’s been topping up my life insurance policy since she found out.

Not that I’d be able to notice.

The only disadvantage is that you won’t be using ice-tec, which I think genuinely helps stuff. But having said that I use old (not sure what brand but pretty sure not entirely Shimano) rotors across my Shimano brakes.

Been using Zees with Sram centreline rotors for over months with no issues.

XT 2-pots with centrelines here. All good. I prefer the centrelines to Shimano rotors. Shimano can be fine but some rotors just squeal like mad, whatever pad setup you use. The centrelines are always good, IME.

Not wanting to highjack the thread, but do you get the ‘honk, honk’ in the wet with Shimano Calipers and centrelines? My Guides are horrendous, but my Shimano brakes and ashima rotors are quiet.

    No.

SLX with centreline no problem. Can be noisy when wet but no worse than SLX and Shimano or SRAM with centreline on the other bikes. In fact the SRAM calipers and disc are the worst of the lot when it comes to noise

XT calipers with Centreline – no issues here. Seem quieter than my old shimano ice-techs in wet/muddy conditions… Also, seem less prone to being knocked into wonk than the shimanos.

I run the opposite, I use Guides or XT Ice Tech with no issues.

Just make sure the pads rub/grips on the bit they’re supposed to rub/grip on. I ran Shimano SLX brakes with some older SRAM discs. It “worked”. However after looking at where the discs showed wear, the pads were rubbing on the rotor arms as well as the braking surface.

Weirdly, my Ridley gravel bike came with full Ultegra…and sram rotors. I have no idea why! They are fine with organic pads but laughably unusable with metal sintered ones if it gets even remotely damp.

Forget “honk honk”, we’re talking “HAAAAHHHRRRRRRGGGGGGAH! HAAAAHHHRRRRRRGGGGGGAH!” every time you touch the brakes.

I am back to organic pads again, funnily enough.

I use Sram Rival brakes with Ultegra rotors, I’ve died twice now, but been resurrected each time,  so on balance I can’t say the Sram/Shimano mix really matters tbh.

Flames, it’ll end in flames, that and fire, of God don’t forget the fire.
