Hi everyone. Gravel bike front mech was shifting badly so I did some investigation. Looks like part of the shifter (I think it’s called the top cap?) has failed.

The cable has worn away the guide as shown in the photo.

The rest of the lever/shifter is fine.

Anyone know where I can source this as a spare part?

I’ve looked on SJS and they don’t seem to list it 🙁

    What version 105 is it?

The shift lever should have the ferrule with the extended ‘tube’ on it where it enters the shifter.

Given parts are hard to get, what about some epoxy or Sugru ?

I’d say that’s from an ST-RS505 lever which I can’t find an exploded diagram for.  Shimano’s website just list the rubber hoods as parts for them.

EDIT – found the diagram but that part isn’t listed on it https://si.shimano.com/ko/pdfs/ev/ST-RS505-3902/EV-ST-RS505-3902.pdf

Thanks all, yes I should have said – it’s an ST-RS505

I’ve been considering whether it could be epoxied – I think the concentrated force from the cable being pulled around will probably be too much for it.

I might end up giving it a go if there’s no other option, though

Can’t quite tell, but is it cable guide A in the above linked doc? Also shown on P79 here:

    https://si.shimano.com/en/pdfs/dm/BR0008/DM-BR0008-10-ENG.pdf

I have a pair in the shed which I’ll take a look at later anyway to see if I can help at all. I’ve already had to replace cable guide B in one of them. They seem to shift around a bit too easily.

@branes, the black piece pictured houses cable guide b. However the plastic has completely cracked/chewed  through by the cable.

Ah, I did fear that looking at it. Assume the guides are toast? You can get them from SJS (it’s where I got mine from):

    https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/gear-spares/shimano-strs505-sl-cable-guide-a-left-hand-y03m75000/

    https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/gear-spares/shimano-strs505-sl-cable-guide-b-left-hand-y03m74000/

Epoxy plus replacement guides might do it?

Shimano does very few spare parts for any of their brifters.

The crash I had on my shiny 105 Di2 was an expensive incident…

Thanks all…looks like I’ll probably try the epoxy then. If that fails (probably will!) then I’ll try to source a second hand shifter to strip for parts
