  • Sorry for the usual: What *renewed* contents insurance for bikes cover

    Morning all,

Apologies for the millionth thread probably about this; I’ve tried searching keywords and very few results came back.

I’ve already got M&S insurance for contents (with accidental cover etc) and buildings. The renewal has come in at £900 for this year – a rise.

I’ve had quite a few eye watering claims in the last few years, but should now have at least a years no claims since the last payout.

I’d like to stay with M&S as I have a declared value for the one bike and all the others under the 2k limit for each bike.

Is M&S still the best choice? I’ve seen John Lewis talked about – can anyone give me the latest STW thoughts on such insurance?

    Thanks

    Neil

I was shopping around last year having moved from M&S to Hiscox (worth checking them out) a few years ago. I also looked at John Lewis, but ended up choosing between NFU and Pedalcover – I went with Pedalcover, but suspect previous claims might rule that out for you.

Thanks Jonathan, do you know what the max limit on undeclared bikes is with NFU?

I have a feeling to was £2k (but doin’t quote me). Adding specific bikes to higher value didn’t up the premium too much (bearing in mind I’m into double figures for bikes to cover). But they work in a fairly bespoke way so can tweak policies quite a bit. One of the reasons I went with pedalcover was so I didn’t have to worry about the in-out of bikes getting changed though.

    +1 for Pedalcover
Darren at pedalcover also appears (at first glance of the policy) to have sorted me out with insurance for doing the Mega which beats hands down Snowcard and Dogtag
very helpful bloke, give him a phone and chat through your circumstances –

I’ve just had a big renewal quote from M&S too. Had a big claim a few years ago when we had 4 bikes nicked.

I’ve looked at alternatives and spoken to a specialist broker – and basically nobody will touch us until five years has passed since the big quote. That includes Pedalcover.

Well, I did get a couple of higher quotes – but we’ll probably have to swallow the M&S hike and at least have the peace of mind that they’ll see us right if we do get done over again.

Let me know if you have better luck obvs!

Use google site: search rather than the rubbish STW search it must be the 2nd most done thread on here after the gazillion election threads..

I’m with pedalcover, AA were good also and nearly the winners but wouldn’t insure bikes locked inside a vehicle – this may or may not bother you. M&S for years beforehand.

Thanks all, that’s great feedback; I’ve dropped Darren a message, and will try NFU, but given Chakapig’s comment, I doubt that I’ll be successful.

Technically, I’ve not had a rise in renewal, but it’d be nice to get it down from £900 per year!

if you are just wanting cover for the theft from the house, direct line are worth a look. had mine stolen in a burglary and they coughed up 5K no problems as they considered the bike general contents as it was in the house, therefore subject to a £10K single items limit. doesn’t cover anything other than the house though or off site – no garages etc

My insurance with Barclays comes in at about 30% of that, and covers a number of bikes kept inside the house (you have to state the number but they didn’t appear to have an upper limit), each of them up to a value of £2.5K. The bikes are covered at cafe stops provided they are locked up.
