    What a solution…

Regarding the Sat Nav I had a 2015 Seat bought at a year old, the post code sat Nav had never been used. Foreign cars especially German cars in Europe don’t use Post Codes for their navigation. I thought there was no Post Code option. Mrs Inbred found the option, you need to click on the town/city option then a post code option pops onto the screen.
Get the autobox serviced, find a good transmission specialist that has a diffusion gearbox oil system. There is a popular misconception that these boxes are sealed for life and don’t need servicing, they do and should. Lastly get the filters and fluids changed and treat it to a few tanks of V power fuel. By that time you’ll have got used to it and hopefully have more trust in it.

RNP I’ll take all those plus ten grand.

Well I’m areally getting used to it. I think the issues with the gearbox were down to the mode. I’d assumed S was sport mode and I didn’t want to go down that route, but apparently it means ‘standard’ and having given it a brief try it feels more like what I’d expect. More pleasing to drive for sure. Engine smoothness also seems to be improving with the driving we’re doing, perhaps it’s getting a good clean out and I’ve added some engine cleaner. The previous average MPG was at 28 so either the last owner was ragging it or trundling round down. Suspect the latter.

There are 18 and 17 inch wheel options listed in the book as well as 19. If I get 17s the tyres are loads cheaper and you can get more energy efficient options. In 18 and 19 they are only performance options.

Loads of 17 inch options on eBay but finding the right parameters is tricky, and I’m conscious it’s a downgrade in most people’s eyes so might affect resale value.

I can go from 285/30R19 rear and 255/35R19 front to 285/35R18 rear and 255/40R18, or I can go to 245/45R17 on both. Hmm.

Then keep both sets, put cross climates on, call them winter wheels and the resale is improved

I think S is Snow mode not Sport! Starts in 2nd and changes early.

No, it does that in E mode which is eco. It doesn’t rev its nuts off in S mode, it just drives pretty reasonably and smoothly like I would. But in Eco mode it keeps the revs even lower, starts in 2nd and doesn’t like changing down, which is a bit annoying on hilly roads.

That was always the issue with the old auto boxes. They’d change up rapidly, refuse to change down unless kicking down and then always be off the turbo in TD cars. That’s before the manual changing we have now. I didn’t buy a TD auto for ~20 years after a particularly unpleasant trip to the Alps due to this.

Good luck with the motah. Looking forward to the obvious dissasembly/Repair Shop episodes avec Moly 👍

gearbox oil is due something like 80k on the 7G+

make sure it has been done, its critical unless you want a very large bill later

check the digital service history on the mymercedes website

I find E mode fine, and a world away from old autos, but then I might have more power and torque.

How come there’s nowhere to put your sunglasses in this thing? Sort it out Mercedes.

Can I do this myself? Don’t I need some kind of code for this? Can I get said code?

Do people actually use their cars Sat nav? Aren’t they all just varying degrees of shite?

The one in the Mini I just bought is OK. It’ll search (like Google) anything really and have a stab at finding it for you, instant traffic updates, re-routes all that stuff. and it’s built in, so no messing about with cradles and power leads.

    yep

I think I just went on the site https://me.secure.mercedes-benz.com/

I can’t remember what I did exactly to register.

You have to poke around the terrible website a bit, but you are looking for “digital service booklet” or “digital service report” and you can download PDFs showing every interaction with Mercedes dealers and specialists that use the system.

Should be a hinged pocket in the housing where the rear view mirror is.

First place I looked, but no. Just a load of buttons for turning off various alarm related functions.

I think you should be more focused on changing the gearbox oil before you discover the small gearbox issues are about to be a second write off lying in the drive.

’m conscious it’s a downgrade in most people’s eyes so might affect resale value.

    A) You could keep the old ones and put them back on.

    B) You won’t do any of that anyway. Resale value is an irrelevance, you’ll just run it into the floor.

Buy new wheels. Sell old wheels. You’ll likely turn a profit.

Odd thing to say. I can’t post observations about the rest of the car until the gearbox oil is changed? Whyever not?

Stop posting on here when you should be changing your gearbox oil, you feckless loser.

RNP – I’ll take the V70, but the best I can offer in return is a collection of antique hammers with loose heads and a bag of worn-out imperial spanners. They might help you fix your other cars, though.

Forgive me, the ongoing saga of your automotive adventures has become my evening entertainment, just today I was thinking ‘I wonder if he found a place to put his sunglasses’.

Bout a year ago I drove an Audi estate, my mechanic said I needed a belt thing in the engine, needs done very soon, drive carefully until, I promised to then immediately forgot and roasted it along the motorway, and it blew up, not like an explosion, more like a few bangs then some weird high pitched squeeky stuff, big puff of smoke then..silence, just a bit paranoid about that sort of thing, I’m sure it will be fine, just enjoy the sunglasses compartment search.

    It’s definitely not there.

There is however a chunky thing behind the rear view mirror that looks like it would contain camera or radar sensor for variable cruise control, which was an option on the car; and when I look in I can clearly see a camera lens. However such a feature is not available in any of the menus in the car and cruise appears to work as traditional cruise.

That chunky thing could also house sensors/camera for auto variable wipers, auto high beam control amount other things.

The area behind the rear view mirror will house the auto windscreen wiper sensor and a 2013 eclass could have auto dimming lights, plus traffic sign recognition but the radar cruise control sensors are in the bumper.

    molgrips

Ah yeah, auto dimming. That might explain why it looks like a cheap dashcam rather than a radar sensor.

Have you ever thought your car might be suffering from depression?

I think it’s picking up on your relentlessly negative attitude towards it and your overly critical condemnation of its actions when it’s simply trying its best. Deep down it knows that whatever it does will never be good enough.

In all honesty, Molls, you’re a monster

Our chunky thing with cameras by the mirror is also the anti crash while under 30mph sensor. This in Ovlov.

Is there a compartment for the guns -its a shooting brake after all and not an estate car.

Perhaps there would be space there for your sunnies. Since I’m sure as an urbanite you haven’t any guns to carry.

Glad the box is working out, was driving my dad’s auto Vivaro yesterday, was a lot more pleasant when put into manual mode.

The actual changes are still clunky at times but I’ll get that looked at. Now I know what E mode is actually doing I understand. And also I can use the manual paddle to kick down if I want, or if I want a first gear start, without having to change modes.

I can’t wait to see how long those tyres last. When they wear down I’ll consider some new wheels. However I may hold onto the 19s in the belief that it might sell better with them on.
